After embedding its electronics into millions of two- and three-wheelers, Pune-based Sedemac Mechatronics is now looking toward the commercial vehicle (CV) segment.

The company’s newest frontier is the development of Aftertreatment Control Modules (ACM) for heavy-duty diesel-powered commercial vehicles.

These units are essentially the conscience of a commercial engine, managing complex systems to ensure they meet stringent emission standards like India’s BS-VI. The company’s launch of an aftertreatment controller for an Indian CV maker, with series supply, is currently under validation.

In this system, an ACM monitors the system through available sensors and electrical signals and actively regenerates the selective catalytic reduction (SCR) catalyst by dosing controlled quantities of AdBlue fluid into the SCR. This controller also monitors the diesel particulate filter (DPF). When it clogs, the ECU commands the injection of diesel fuel directly into the DPF line to burn out the clogging. This is critical because if the system controller fails, it could lead to additional emissions and harmful gases being released into the environment.

The development should be seen in the context of the commercial vehicle industry, which is expected to record a steady growth trajectory, with a projected CAGR of 2–4% from Fiscal 2025 to Fiscal 2031.

Sedemac is also engaging in both ICE- and electric-powered light commercial vehicle (LCV) markets through its EFI ECUs and MCUs.

As per the company, these are in the early ‘commercial business win’ and ‘proof of concept (PoC) demonstration’ stages, respectively.

“The beauty of technology is that products tend to be geography-specific, but technologies are market-agnostic,” says Amit Dixit, Sedemac’s Founder and Joint Managing Director. He spoke to Autocar Professional in Mumbai on Thursday on the sidelines of the pre-IPO briefing.

Sedemac designs and supplies critical, control-intensive electronic control units to major vehicle and industrial equipment manufacturers in India, the United States, and Europe.

Prof. Shashikanth Suryanarayanan, Managing Director of the company, views Sedemac’s entry into the commercial vehicle (CV) segment as a natural extension of the company’s core mission: creating original control technologies that solve complex engineering problems for massive global markets.
