Even as Toyota Kirloskar Motor (TKM) registered its highest-ever passenger vehicle (40,247 units, up 43% YoY) as well as utility vehicle sales (33,809 units, up 43% YoY) in October 2025, a quick look at the model-wise wholesales for the company reveals that the unthinkable has happened. The Innova, sold as the Hycross and Crysta and which is TKM’s longstanding No. 1 model, has been dethroned in October by the Urban Cruiser Hyryder midsize SUV.
To feed the growing demand for the Hyryder, TKM dispatched 11,555 units to its showrooms in October 2025 – 466 more than the 11,089 units combined for the Innova Hycross and Crysta.
As per the latest SIAM wholesales numbers, TKM factory dispatches of the Hyryder at 11,555 units last month were 466 units more than the Innova (11,089 units). This is the first time that the Hyryder has crossed the 10,000-unit sales mark, beating the previous best of 9,100 units in August 2025.
The Hyryder’s 11,555 units are a handsome 112% YoY increase (October 2024: 5,449 units) and reflect just how strong the demand is for this midsize SUV in the domestic market. The Hyryder and Innovas together comprised 67% of TKM’s record UV sales last month. And the Rumion MPV also hit its highest monthly sales: 3,075 units.
The Innova twins – Hycross and Crysta – though still have a strong lead on the cumulative seven-month sales front. Between April-October 2025, the Innova siblings together sold 64,678 units, up 5% YoY, and were ahead of the Hyryder (56,754 units, up 57% YoY) by 7,924 units.
Despite growing competition in the midsize SUV market, demand for the Hyryder continues to be strong, particularly in the strong-hybrid passenger vehicle market where Toyota India commands an 80% share.
HYRYDER TO RACE PAST 200,000 SALES MILESTONE VERY SOON
Toyota India entered the midsize SUV market much later than most of its rivals in this segment, but the Hyryder seems to be making up for lost time. Launched on September 9, 2022, the Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder is Toyota Kirloskar Motor’s first midsize SUV. This rebadged version of the Maruti Grand Vitara has, since its launch 38 months ago, has sold 188,897 units in the domestic market till end-October 2025. At this stage, it is 11,103 units short of the 200,000 milestone, which it should achieve either this month (November) but surely by mid-December 2025.
While the first 50,000 Hyryders were sold in a little over 15 months, the next 50,000 units took 11 months. The 150,000 sales mark was surpassed in June 2025. Since then, an additional 38,897 units have been sold in a little over four months, indicative of the frenetic pace of customer demand for the Toyota Hyryder as well as its growing share of TKM sales.
In FY2023, the Hyryder (22,839 units) accounted for 13% of TKM’s 173,245 units. This rose to 20% in FY2024 (48,916 units out of TKM’s 245,000 PVs and FY2025 (60,388 units out of TKM’s 309,230 PVs). In the current fiscal’s first seven months, the Hyryder 56,754 units give it a 27% share of TKM’s total PV dispatches of 206,195 units.
On the export front, it is estimated that the Hyryder has clocked overseas dispatches of over 77,000 units, including a high of 27,623 units in FY2025. As a result, combined domestic and export market sales of this model are estimated at over 265,000 units.
As in FY2025, when it was TKM’s best-selling Maruti-rebadged model, the Hyryder (56,754 units) is ahead of the three other badge-engineered models in India that sport the Toyota logo: the Maruti Baleno-based Glanza hatchback (31,405 units), the Fronx-based Urban Cruiser Taisor (19,092 units) and the Ertiga-based Rumion MPV (10,342 units).
The strong-hybrid Hyryder has an EV-only mode that delivers stellar economy.
STRONG HYBRID VARIANTS A STRONG DRAW
The Toyota Hyryder is essentially a modern-looking SUV that exudes a rugged look — sportier than its donor model, the Maruti Grand Vitara — but both midsize SUVs are identical in every other way. The Hyryder’s upmarket, well-appointed interior speaks to comfort, and the features list is generous — albeit the fully loaded trim levels are exclusive to the strong-hybrid variants. And there’s the lure of the Toyota badge too.
The Hyryder’s USP is its strong-hybrid petrol powertrain, aimed at filling the void created by the lack of a diesel engine and also bridging the gap between petrol and EVs. With a claimed fuel efficiency figure of 27.97 kpl, the Hyryder is one of the most fuel-efficient vehicles available in India and benefits from technology that minimises losses in a pure IC engine through electrification — leveraging benefits such as brake-energy recuperation and turning off the engine while idling excessively.
The petrol-only SUV is currently available in 13 variants — 8 petrol, 2 CNG, and 3 strong hybrid — and priced from Rs 13.10 lakh (on-road Delhi) for the base E variant through to Rs 23.20 lakh (on-road Delhi) for the top-end V Strong Hybrid eCVT variant. Interestingly, the Hyryder has the distinction of being India’s first SUV to get CNG power when TKM launched the CNG variant in November 2022.
Will the Hyryder, which rivals the new Maruti Victoris, Maruti Grand Vitara, Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos and the Honda Elevate, continue to outsell the Innova in the coming months? That’s difficult to pin down at this stage, given that the Hyryder was available with mouthwatering discounts and benefits accruing up to Rs 135,000, depending on the powertrain and variant.
