SAVWIPL Launches Volkswagen Brand in Sri Lanka with Taigun and Virtus
Partnership with Continental Cars marks Volkswagen’s entry into Sri Lanka as SAVWIPL expands its regional export footprint from India.
Škoda Auto Volkswagen India Private Limited (SAVWIPL) has officially launched the Volkswagen brand in Sri Lanka through a partnership with Continental Cars and Commercials Ltd, marking the company’s latest step in expanding its regional presence beyond India.
The company has introduced two India-manufactured models in the Sri Lankan market — the Volkswagen Taigun SUV and Virtus sedan — as part of its initial product portfolio. Both vehicles are produced at SAVWIPL’s Chakan manufacturing facility near Pune and exported under the group’s “Make-in-India, for India and the World” strategy.
The launch also includes the inauguration of a new 3S facility in Sri Jayewardenepura Kotte, Colombo. Developed with local partner Continental Cars and Commercials Ltd, the showroom spans 18,713 sq. ft., is spread across nearly one acre of land and includes more than 20 service bays for sales, service and spare parts operations.
Piyush Arora, Managing Director and CEO of Škoda Auto Volkswagen India Private Limited, said Sri Lanka represents a market with strong appreciation for quality engineering and premium mobility products. He added that the company aims to use its localisation, engineering and manufacturing scale in India to support long-term regional growth.
Jan Bures, Executive Director for Sales, Marketing and Digital at SAVWIPL, said the Taigun and Virtus have been selected to address demand in Sri Lanka’s premium passenger vehicle segment. He added that the company’s focus would remain on establishing a strong retail and after-sales network to support long-term business growth in the market.
SAVWIPL said the Sri Lanka launch comes at a time when the country’s automotive market is showing signs of stabilisation and recovery, with customer interest in premium vehicles increasing. The company also described the move as part of its broader strategy to strengthen India’s role as a manufacturing and export hub for the Volkswagen Group.
SAVWIPL currently oversees the Indian operations of six Volkswagen Group brands — Volkswagen, Škoda, Audi, Bentley, Lamborghini and Porsche. The company operates manufacturing facilities at Chakan, Pune, and Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, with a combined annual production capacity of 315,000 units.
The company said it has exported more than 700,000 vehicles to over 40 countries and crossed the milestone of 2 million locally produced vehicles in 2025. Its India-produced models, including the Volkswagen Taigun and Virtus, along with the Škoda Kylaq, Kushaq and Slavia, have together crossed cumulative sales of 550,000 units.
