PPFs Could Become An OEM Dealership Offering In 3 Years: Nippon Paint's Jenender Anand

Paint Protection Films (PPFs), currently a niche offering in India's automotive aftermarket, could become a standard feature across dealership networks within the next three years as vehicle manufacturers increasingly evaluate and approve the technology, according to Nippon Paint India.

Jenender Anand, Vice President, Automotive Refinish Business, Nippon Paint India, said automakers are recognising the growing consumer demand for paint protection solutions and the revenue potential they offer dealerships. As a result, the industry is moving steadily towards formalising PPF offerings through authorised sales and service channels.

"Every OEM is thinking about PPF and testing this category at a very advanced stage. They have recognised the opportunity. It should not take more than two to three years for broader adoption across the industry," Anand told Autocar Professional.

PPFs are transparent films applied to a vehicle's painted surfaces to protect them from scratches, stone chips, UV exposure, and environmental damage. While awareness has increased in recent years, penetration remains low, with Anand estimating that less than 1% of new vehicles sold in India currently receive PPF treatment.

The category, however, is gaining momentum as dealerships look for new avenues to boost profitability beyond vehicle sales. PPF packages typically command a significantly higher ticket size than conventional appearance-enhancement products, making them an attractive proposition for dealer networks.

According to Anand, the next phase of growth will depend on increasing awareness among consumers and creating a trained installation ecosystem. Nippon Paint currently trains applicators and technicians through its Global Colour Centre in Manesar and works with detailing centres and channel partners to improve installation quality and customer experience.

The company believes wider OEM participation will help standardise quality, improve consumer confidence, and accelerate adoption across the market. For suppliers, dealerships, and detailing centres alike, the shift could transform PPFs from a premium niche product into a mainstream vehicle protection solution.

As customers increasingly focus on preserving vehicle appearance and resale value, PPFs may soon become as familiar in dealership accessory packages as extended warranties and maintenance plans, signalling a new chapter of growth for India's automotive aftermarket.
