Plenitude and Pininfarina Team Up to Redesign EV Charging Stations
Italian energy company Plenitude has partnered with design firm Pininfarina to develop a new concept for electric vehicle charging hubs, combining functionality with environmental integration.
Plenitude, through its subsidiary Plenitude On The Road, announced on 3 March 2026 a strategic partnership with Pininfarina to redesign the spaces hosting its electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure. The agreement covers the design, development, and rollout of a new charging station concept intended to be recognisable and adaptable across different urban and territorial settings.
Under the terms of the partnership, Pininfarina will lead the design work, with a focus on material quality, ergonomics, and integration into surrounding environments. Beyond the physical design of the stations, the project also includes the development of additional services aimed at improving the experience for drivers during charging time, though specific services have not yet been disclosed.
As a first practical step under the agreement, four Plenitude On The Road charging points will be installed at Pininfarina's headquarters in Cambiano, near Turin. The installation will include two alternating current (AC) chargers with power up to 22 kW, suitable for standard overnight or extended stops, and two direct current (DC) chargers with power up to 50 kW, which enable faster top-ups. Plenitude described the move as part of Pininfarina's broader ESG commitments and its engagement with the ecological transition.
Paolo Martini, CEO of Plenitude On The Road, said the partnership brought together two companies with complementary expertise. "We are in a period of profound transition, technology is evolving rapidly, and this agreement will help reshape the way we experience charging areas, with the aim of offering e-drivers increasingly personalised services tailored to their needs," he said.
Paolo Dellachà, CEO of Pininfarina, framed the collaboration within the company's longer history with electric mobility, noting that the firm had worked on its first electric vehicle concept as far back as the 1970s. "Together with Plenitude, we aim to transform charging areas into spaces that are more welcoming, recognisable, and harmoniously integrated into their surroundings," he said, adding that the company viewed design as "a driver of progress and an accelerator of change."
Plenitude operates in more than 15 countries and currently manages a network of around 23,000 EV charging points. The company, controlled by Italian energy giant Eni, also generates 5.8 GW of electricity from renewable sources and supplies energy to 10 million customers. It has set a target of reaching 10 GW of renewable capacity globally by 2028, reflecting a broader push by Eni to expand its low-carbon business units.
Pininfarina, founded in 1930 and listed on the stock exchange since 1986, built its reputation primarily through automotive design before expanding into architecture, product design, nautical design, and other mobility sectors. The firm employs 500 people across offices in Italy, Germany, China, and the United States, and has designed more than 1,450 automotive and mobility projects and over 750 product and architectural projects over its history. It has received more than 90 international design awards in the past decade alone.
The announcement comes as demand for EV charging infrastructure continues to grow across Europe, where governments and private operators are under increasing pressure to expand network coverage and improve the quality of the charging experience. Accessibility, ease of use, and the physical environment of charging locations have been cited by industry analysts as factors that can influence consumer confidence in electric vehicles, particularly for drivers without access to home charging. Collaborations between energy infrastructure providers and design firms represent a shift in how the sector is approaching the challenge of encouraging broader EV adoption.
