Mahindra Moves to Take Possession of 800 Acres for Nagpur Manufacturing Hub

Mahindra & Mahindra is moving towards taking possession of the first 800 acres of land for its upcoming integrated automobile and tractor manufacturing facility at Additional Butibori in Nagpur, Maharashtra, the company said on Monday.

The greenfield plant, announced earlier this year, will be spread across 1,500 acres in Maharashtra’s Vidarbha region. Once fully operational, it will have an annual production capacity of more than 5 lakh vehicles and 1 lakh tractors, making it Mahindra’s largest integrated manufacturing facility in India.

Supplier Park Part of Integrated Facility

The project will also be supported by a 150-acre supplier park at Sambhajinagar. The supplier facility will provide components to the upcoming Nagpur plant as well as Mahindra’s existing manufacturing facilities at Chakan and Nashik.

Mahindra did not disclose the timeline for starting production at the Nagpur facility in the latest announcement.

Workforce Transition Planned

The automaker is also beginning to build the workforce required for the new plant, with a focus on training employees for manufacturing automobiles and tractors across multiple powertrains and newer technologies.

Over the next two to three years, employees from Mahindra’s existing manufacturing operations will have an opportunity to participate in a selection process for roles at the Nagpur facility.

The selection will take into account technical capabilities, demonstrated behaviour, alignment with Mahindra’s values and ability to collaborate effectively, the company said. Mahindra also plans to establish a skilling centre in Nagpur to train workers in areas including mechanical operations, welding and painting.

The focus on workforce development comes as Mahindra expands its manufacturing footprint to support growth across its automotive and tractor businesses while preparing plants and employees for a wider mix of powertrain technologies.
