Piaggio Secures 100-Unit Order for Apé Xtra Bada 700 from HeidelbergCement India
The newly launched diesel cargo three-wheeler will be deployed across 53 districts in Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, and Bihar under the landmark deal.
Piaggio Vehicles Pvt. Ltd. (PVPL) has announced an order of more than 100 units of its newly introduced Apé Xtra Bada 700 from HeidelbergCement India Limited. The vehicles are set to be deployed across 53 districts spanning Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, and Bihar, marking one of the more significant fleet commitments for the model since its launch.
Piaggio, a 100% subsidiary of the Italian Piaggio Group, has positioned the Apé Xtra Bada 700 as a direct competitor to entry-level four-wheeler small commercial vehicles (SCVs). The company describes the deal as evidence that the three-wheeler segment can encroach on applications traditionally served by four-wheeled cargo vehicles.
The Apé Xtra Bada 700 is built on an entirely new platform, incorporating a redesigned chassis, updated suspension geometry, and a new 700 DI diesel engine. The company claims a 750 kg payload capacity, which it describes as the highest in the diesel cargo three-wheeler segment. The cargo deck measures seven feet in length, a specification Piaggio says is a first for the industry.
Other notable features include 12-inch radial tyres, a 3.5-inch digital instrument cluster, an optional rear parking sensor, and a driver cabin designed for extended use. Piaggio is offering a five-year industry warranty on the vehicle.
The cement and construction sector has traditionally relied on four-wheeled light commercial vehicles for last-mile distribution, given their payload and deck-size advantages over three-wheelers. Piaggio's strategy with the Apé Xtra Bada 700 appears aimed at closing that gap, offering comparable carrying capacity at potentially lower operating costs.
Amit Sagar, Executive Vice President for CV Domestic Business and Retail Finance at PVPL, described the HeidelbergCement order as a validation of the vehicle's capabilities and said the company aimed to offer improved total cost of ownership for commercial operators.
PVPL commenced operations in India in 1999 and has since built a presence across diesel, petrol, CNG, LPG, and electric three-wheeler segments. The company manufactures vehicles at its Baramati plant in Maharashtra, with an installed annual capacity of over 330,000 commercial vehicles and 180,000 two-wheelers. Its products are exported to more than 50 countries.
