OpenGMSL Association Formed to Standardise In-Vehicle Connectivity Across Automotive Ecosystem

A group of major automotive and technology companies have come together to establish the OpenGMSL Association, a new non-profit organisation focused on creating a global standard for high-speed video and data transmission in vehicles. The initiative is based on Analog Devices Inc.’s (ADI) Gigabit Multimedia Serial Link (GMSL) technology, which is already widely adopted across the automotive sector.

The association’s founding members include key players such as ADI, Aptiv PLC, DENSO Corporation, Hyundai Mobis, Qualcomm Technologies Inc., and GlobalFoundries, among others. With participation from OEMs, Tier 1 suppliers, and semiconductor companies, the association plans to develop an open, interoperable standard that supports applications including advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), infotainment platforms, and autonomous driving.

Paul Fernando, President of the OpenGMSL Association, noted that GMSL has already been adopted by more than 25 OEMs and 50 Tier-1 suppliers, with over one billion integrated circuits shipped to date. He added that the association will help drive further innovation while reducing system integration complexity and development costs.

Representatives from participating companies also expressed their support. Yasmine King from Analog Devices stated that the association supports efforts to reduce system complexity while enabling innovation. Vamshi Kandalla from Granite River Labs emphasised the potential of OpenGMSL to facilitate faster adoption of connected and autonomous vehicle technologies. Sudipto Bose of GlobalFoundries highlighted the role of advanced semiconductor processes in supporting this initiative.

Other contributors including Hyundai Mobis, indie Semiconductor, Keysight Technologies, Rohde & Schwarz, and Teledyne LeCroy also indicated their support, noting that an open standard will improve ecosystem collaboration and enable consistent system validation and performance.

The OpenGMSL Association is a non-profit organisation managed by an independent board of directors. It brings together various stakeholders in the automotive ecosystem to promote the global adoption of a standard for high-speed video and data transmission based on GMSL technology. The association focuses on enabling interoperability, efficient testing, and cost-effective integration.
