Novelic Enters Indian Market with mmWave Radar Solutions for Vehicles
The Serbian radar technology firm establishes a Chennai-based entity targeting passenger vehicles, commercial vehicles, and India's dominant two- and three-wheeler segments.
Novelic, a Belgrade-based provider of millimetre-wave radar solutions, has announced its entry into the Indian market through a newly incorporated entity, Novelic India Private Ltd, headquartered in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. The move is aimed at addressing rising demand for advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) across India's diverse and rapidly expanding mobility sector.
The expansion builds on existing infrastructure already established in the country. Earlier this year, Novelic, in collaboration with its parent company Sona Comstar, set up what it describes as the first 60 GHz radar production line in India. That facility is expected to begin producing in-cabin monitoring radar modules for a major western Tier 1 automotive supplier later this year.
Central to Novelic's India strategy is its 79 GHz automotive radar platform, ASPER, which offers a 180-degree horizontal field of view and is designed for ultra-short, short, and mid-range ADAS applications. The patent-protected technology is positioned as a cost-effective alternative to conventional multi-sensor setups, allowing vehicle manufacturers to consolidate several safety functions into fewer hardware components.
The timing of the market entry aligns with recent regulatory developments in India. Amendments to industry standards AIS 145, AIS 186, and AIS 187 have introduced mandatory safety requirements for commercial vehicles, including moving off information systems, blind spot information systems, and reverse parking assist systems. Novelic states that a single ASPER module, by virtue of its wide field of view, can fulfil multiple of these requirements simultaneously on one side of a commercial vehicle.
For passenger vehicles, the company sees an opportunity to help Indian original equipment manufacturers offer park assist, blind spot detection, and rear cross-traffic alert functions at reduced system cost and complexity, potentially replacing combinations of ultrasonic sensors and corner radars currently used for these purposes.
Novelic also sees significant potential in the two- and three-wheeler segment, which constitutes the largest vehicle category in India by volume. The ASPER platform is said to support advanced rider assistance features including blind spot detection, front and rear collision warning, and front cross-traffic alert, with all radar data processed on the sensor's own system-on-chip — a design choice intended to make the technology viable for lower-cost vehicles that lack dedicated ADAS control units or in-vehicle networks.
Novelic was founded in 2012 in Belgrade, Serbia, and has since built a portfolio of intellectual property in radar-based perception technology. In 2025, the company received its first Tier 1 supplier nomination for a 60 GHz in-cabin monitoring solution developed to meet child presence detection requirements under Euro NCAP standards.
