Mercedes-Benz Research and Development India Celebrates 10 years of accident research
Marking a decade of contributions to road safety, MBRDI highlights innovations in accident analysis and collaborative initiatives at the SAFE ROADS India Summit 2024, aiming to address India’s unique road safety challenges.
Mercedes-Benz Research and Development India (MBRDI), the largest research and development center for Mercedes-Benz Group AG outside Germany, has completed 10 years of accident research in India. The milestone was marked at the Mercedes-Benz SAFE ROADS India Summit 2024, held in Bengaluru, which focused on enhancing road safety awareness and addressing the country's pressing road safety challenges.
India continues to grapple with high road accident rates, recording over 4.8 lakh accidents and 1.72 lakh fatalities in 2023. MBRDI's accident investigations reveal that 95% of drivers and front passengers using seat belts avoided injuries, highlighting the importance of passive safety systems.
The MBRDI Accident Research team, established as a digital hub for global operations, specialises in accident reconstruction, anonymisation, and data analytics. Active accident investigations began in 2019, and the team has since analysed 52 critical accident cases, including seven involving electric vehicles. A notable milestone was the investigation of the first EQS accident, showcasing expertise in emerging automotive technologies. By analysing accident data, the team identifies deformation patterns and informs the development of improved vehicle safety systems.
Prof. Dr. Paul Dick, Director of Vehicle Safety at Mercedes-Benz AG, emphasised the importance of local accident research in achieving the company’s vision of accident-free mobility by 2050. He noted that MBRDI’s decade of insights helps address the unique safety challenges in India while contributing to global safety advancements.
MBRDI integrates advanced technologies such as deep learning-based image anonymisation, Xentry diagnostics, Python-based data analysis, and augmented reality tools like VuZix smart glasses to enhance accident research. Tools like e-Call data and 3D scanning further support precise accident tracking and collaborative analysis.
Manu Saale, Managing Director and CEO of MBRDI, highlighted road safety as a shared responsibility, emphasising the need for collaborative efforts to address India’s road safety issues. The SAFE ROADS initiative, launched in 2015, fosters partnerships with policymakers, academia, industry, and NGOs to promote innovative safety solutions.
The SAFE ROADS India Summit 2024 featured a distinguished panel including Piyush Tewari, Founder and CEO of SaveLIFE Foundation, and M. N. Anucheth, IPS, Bengaluru’s Joint Police Commissioner (Traffic), who discussed the role of data-driven insights in improving road safety.
The event also showcased a student ideathon on road safety, with teams presenting innovative solutions. The winning team from IIT Madras proposed a LiDAR-based terrain drop-off detection system for Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS).
Other ideas included an AI-based dynamic driver feedback system from IIT Hyderabad and a geo-fencing solution for enforcing speed limits in sensitive areas, proposed by IIT Madras. These ideas underline the potential of technology-driven approaches to enhancing road safety in India.
