Mahindra's EV Mix Hits Record 14.4% in June as XEV 9e, 9S Lift Electric SUV Sales

Mahindra & Mahindra's electric vehicle strategy reached a new milestone in June, with battery-electric vehicles accounting for a record 14.4% of its passenger vehicle retail sales, more than doubling from 6.1% a year earlier as incremental volumes from the  XEV 9e and  XEV 9S boosted EV mix.

According to a powertrain mix analysis of the government's VAHAN retail registration data by analyst Ankush (@ferrarirules on X), nearly one in every seven Mahindra passenger vehicles retailed during June was electric, underlining the rapid acceptance of the company's Born Electric SUV portfolio.

The higher EV contribution has broadened Mahindra's powertrain mix while leaving its traditional strengths intact. Diesel remained the backbone of the company's business, accounting for 69.9% of June retail sales, while petrol contributed 15.7%. The figures support Mahindra’s strategy of building a strong electric pillar alongside its existing diesel SUV franchise, rather than replacing it.

While many rivals have focused on CNG as the primary alternative to petrol, Mahindra has placed its transition strategy squarely on premium battery-electric SUVs. The success of the XEV 9e, along with incremental volumes from the XEV 9S, suggests customers are increasingly open to embracing electric mobility in the premium SUV segment. The latest data also bolsters Mahindra’s emergence as one of India’s fastest-growing electric passenger vehicle manufacturers.

While Tata Motors continues to lead the market in absolute EV volumes, Mahindra has forged a strong position in the premium electric SUV space, with the XEV 9e and XEV 9S helping to achieve one of the highest EV penetrations among mainstream passenger vehicle makers.

For Mahindra, June is not just a record monthly EV mix but a sign that the company’s multi-year investment in dedicated electric platforms is beginning to deliver meaningful scale, creating a more balanced powertrain portfolio while preserving the diesel-led SUV business that remains the foundation of its success.
