KPIT Technologies and IIT Bombay Sign MoU for Mobility Research

KPIT Technologies and the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on February 23, 2026, establishing a joint research collaboration focused on next-generation mobility. The agreement was signed at IIT Bombay's campus in Mumbai by KPIT CEO Kishor Patil and IIT Bombay Director Prof. Shireesh Kedare.

The partnership is structured around aligning master's and doctoral research programmes with mobility industry problem statements, with a specific focus on artificial intelligence. Its stated objective is to accelerate the transition from laboratory proof-of-concepts to deployable products, and to contribute to technology and policy thinking in the mobility space.

Under the arrangement, research scholars will work on industry-defined problem statements, gaining exposure to product engineering, system validation, regulatory considerations, and deployment environments. KPIT's engineering and R&D teams will engage directly with IIT Bombay faculty and postgraduate researchers throughout the process. The collaboration targets areas including safer mobility systems, intelligent vehicle platforms, sustainable powertrains, and future transportation infrastructure.

The partnership follows a broader trend of Indian technology companies formalising ties with academic institutions to shorten the gap between research and commercial application. By embedding industry requirements into academic research cycles, both parties aim to develop graduates who are equipped for roles in engineering and product development.

KPIT Technologies, headquartered in Pune, specialises in software and AI solutions for the automotive sector. The company states it has contributed software to over 20 million vehicles across more than 2,000 production programmes. IIT Bombay, established in 1958, is among India's oldest and most prominent engineering institutions, with over 650 faculty members and more than 52,600 alumni across engineering and science disciplines.

Both institutions described the collaboration as a contribution to India's deep-technology ecosystem.
