India’s passenger vehicle market recorded its strongest-ever May performance, with wholesale dispatches rising 26% year-on-year to 440,808 units in May 2026, according to data compiled by Cargraphical using Autopunditz figures.
The increase of 91,095 units over May 2025 helped lift the rolling 12-month (TTM) industry volume to 4.87 million units, bringing the market closer to the 5-million-unit milestone.
Record May Performance Pushes Industry Higher
TTM Volumes Approach 5 Million Units
The industry's rolling 12-month volume reached 4,867,705 units in May 2026, up from 4,776,610 units recorded in April. The report notes that India crossed the 4 million TTM mark only in FY2024, making the pace of expansion notable. At current monthly run rates, the market appears on course to surpass the 5 million TTM threshold during FY2027. The increase reflects both higher industry volumes and a broader shift in consumer demand towards personal mobility and utility vehicles over the past few years.
SUVs Continue To Drive Market Expansion
SUVs remained the primary growth engine for the industry in May, accounting for 58,404 of the additional units sold compared with the same month last year. The segment contributed over 64% of the market’s overall volume growth, underlining the continuing shift in consumer preference toward utility vehicles.
Hatchbacks also posted growth, adding nearly 16,000 units year-on-year. According to the report, strong volumes from models such as the Baleno, WagonR and Swift helped sustain demand in the segment despite the broader market pivot toward SUVs.
A notable trend was the growth in the sub-four-metre MUV category, which recorded the highest trailing twelve-month compound annual growth rate among vehicle sub-segments.
Maruti Suzuki remained the clear market leader in May, dispatching 190,337 vehicles, up 40% year-on-year. The automaker accounted for nearly 60% of the industry’s incremental volume growth during the month and increased its market share to 43.2%.
The company’s performance was supported by strong demand for the Dzire, Fronx and Ertiga, while six Maruti models featured among India’s ten best-selling passenger vehicles during the month. The Fronx emerged as the country’s second-highest-selling model, behind the Dzire.
While Maruti maintained a significant lead, competition for the second position remained intense.
Tata Motors recorded dispatches of 59,090 units in May, registering 42.2% year-on-year growth and narrowly retaining second place. Mahindra followed closely with 58,021 units, leaving a gap of just 1,069 units between the two manufacturers.
Hyundai retained fourth position with 47,837 units, while Toyota completed the top five with 30,574 units. Kia ranked sixth with 27,586 units.
The report highlighted Hyundai’s declining market share, which fell to 10.9% in May 2026 from 12.6% a year earlier, despite positive volume growth.
TTM Volumes Reflect Changing Competitive Landscape
On a trailing twelve-month basis, Maruti Suzuki remained comfortably ahead with 1.93 million units. Mahindra and Tata remained separated by a relatively small margin, with Mahindra at 669,867 units and Tata at 662,721 units.
Among the larger manufacturers, Tata recorded the strongest TTM growth rate at 22.9%, while Mahindra grew 15.6% and Toyota 16.2%. Hyundai’s TTM growth stood at 2.6%.
The report suggested that if current trends continue, the gap between Tata and Mahindra could narrow further over the coming months.
The Maruti Suzuki Dzire was India’s best-selling passenger vehicle in May with 24,546 units, followed by the Fronx at 20,686 units.
The Ertiga and Tata Punch also crossed the 20,000-unit mark, making May 2026 one of the few months in which four models exceeded that sales threshold simultaneously.
Among non-Maruti models, the Tata Punch, Tata Nexon, Mahindra Scorpio and Hyundai Creta featured in the top ten rankings.
Four Models Cross 20,000 Units In A Single Month
The top-selling vehicle rankings reflected both market growth and increasing concentration among leading nameplates. The Dzire led the market with 24,546 units, followed by the Fronx at 20,686 units, the Ertiga at 20,350 units and the Tata Punch at 20,208 units. According to the report, May 2026 marked the first time that four models simultaneously crossed the 20,000-unit threshold. Outside Maruti and Tata, only the Mahindra Scorpio and Hyundai Creta featured in the monthly top-10 list, highlighting the strength of the two manufacturers' current portfolios.
The report identified the mid-sized SUV segment as one of the most competitive areas of the market.
Maruti Suzuki’s combined share through the Grand Vitara and Victoris stood at 24.2% in May, ahead of Hyundai’s 19.2%. The shift reflects increasing competition in a category long associated with the Hyundai Creta.
Meanwhile, in the sub-four-metre SUV segment, Maruti’s Fronx and Brezza combination accounted for nearly 38% of total segment volumes.
Industry Approaches Five-Million-Unit Milestone
With trailing twelve-month volumes reaching 4.87 million units, the Indian passenger vehicle industry is on course to surpass the 5-million-unit mark during FY2027.
The report noted that the industry crossed the 4-million-unit threshold only a few years ago, underscoring the pace of market expansion.
Looking ahead, SUVs are expected to remain the primary source of growth, while competition among major manufacturers is likely to intensify as new products enter key volume segments.
