Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited and Tata Motors have entered into a partnership to establish a pilot program for the systematic collection and recycling of used automotive lubricants. The two entities signed a MoU in Mumbai on Tuesday to build an organized and traceable system designed to process the hazardous waste into high quality re-refined base oil.
The initiative aligns with India's evolving Extended Producer Responsibility framework, which mandates sustainable waste management practices for industrial and automotive producers. Under the agreement, Tata Motors will utilize its domestic service network, which spans over 4,500 sales and service touchpoints, to manage the structured collection of used lubricants from its commercial vehicle ecosystem. HPCL will anchor the logistics, aggregation, and transportation of the waste oil through authorized channels to ensure it is delivered safely to registered recycling facilities.
A joint committee featuring representatives from both organizations will oversee the initial rollout across select states to monitor operational progress and evaluate future scalability. The project aims to improve resource efficiency and reduce the carbon footprint of automotive maintenance operations by reintegrating the re-refined base stock back into finished industrial lubricants.
