Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India (HMSI) is set to expand its total production capacity to 7 million units annually by 2027, reinforcing India’s pivotal role in Honda’s global two-wheeler strategy. The ramp-up will be enabled by a new post-assembly line at its Bidadi (Karnataka) facility, the company announced as it marked 25 years of operations in India.
With four manufacturing plants already operational — in Manesar, Tapukara, Narsapura, and Bidadi — HMSI continues to invest in capacity, localisation, and future-ready platforms to cater to rising domestic demand and support its growing export ambitions.
“Honda two-wheelers are not just made in India — they are made with the Indian mind,” said Tsutsumu Otani President, CEO, and Managing Director of Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India (HMSI) said at an event on Wednesday. “Every feature and design choice reflects our deep understanding of Indian roads, Indian riders, and Indian aspirations.”
India is already among Honda's largest and most important global markets, and HMSI’s expanding footprint underlines the company's long-term commitment. Over the years, Honda has built a robust nationwide retail network comprising over 6,000 Red Wing outlets and 150+ premium Big Wing showrooms, enabling it to reach customers across both mass and niche segments.
As part of its new strategic theme — ‘Generation Honda: Towards Golden Dominance’ — the company launched two new ICE motorcycles to address both value and aspiration:
The new models are designed to reinforce Honda’s position in the highly competitive 100–125cc segment, where it already leads the automatic scooter category with the iconic Activa.
Looking ahead, HMSI reiterated its commitment to electrification, noting that it will introduce electric two-wheelers “with the right timing, right product, and appropriate market readiness.” While timelines remain under wraps, Honda’s phased approach is expected to begin with urban-focused EVs and then scale as ecosystem maturity improves.
HMSI is also aligning with Honda’s global targets of achieving zero traffic fatalities involving Honda vehicles and carbon neutrality across all products and operations by 2050. In India, the company continues to invest in road safety education, sustainable operations, and community engagement initiatives.
Celebrating 25 years of operations, HMSI’s strategic blueprint combines capacity expansion, mass-market dominance, premium brand building, and EV integration. With a 7-million-unit production target and a dual-pronged product strategy, the company is laying the groundwork to overtake Hero MotoCorp to grab the leadership position in the highly competitive India’s two-wheeler landscape.
