Hindustan Zinc Deploys EV Bus Fleet in Rajasthan
The company aims to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050.
Hindustan Zinc Limited has launched an electric bus fleet at its Zinc Smelter Debari unit in Udaipur, marking the start of a broader plan to deploy 41 such buses across its operations in Rajasthan.
The company said the shift from diesel to electric buses is aimed at reducing Scope 3 emissions linked to employee transportation. The fleet has been rolled out in partnership with Enviiiro Wheels Mobility Pvt. Ltd.
Hindustan Zinc estimates that the transition will help avoid more than 11,000 tonnes of CO₂ equivalent emissions over the contract period.
The Debari deployment is part of the company’s wider push to integrate lower-emission transport systems into its operations. Additional buses will be introduced across other sites as part of the 41-bus plan.
Arun Misra, CEO of Hindustan Zinc, said the move aligns with the company’s broader decarbonisation strategy and its target to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050 or earlier.
The initiative is linked to the company’s commitments under the Science Based Targets initiative and its membership in the International Council on Mining and Metals.
Hindustan Zinc said it has been increasing the share of renewable energy in its power mix, which currently stands at about 18%. It has also entered into a 530 MW round-the-clock renewable energy supply agreement, expected to meet over 70% of its total power requirement. The company said initial supply under this agreement has already begun.
The company was ranked as the top metals and mining firm in the S&P Global Corporate Sustainability Assessment 2025.
Hindustan Zinc, a Vedanta Group company, is a major producer of zinc and among the top global silver producers, with operations supplying to over 40 countries.
