JLR Design Veteran Gerry McGovern to Exit, Launch Own Creative Consultancy
Exit comes after over 20 years of steering JLR’s design strategy across key brands and global repositioning
Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) today said that Gerry McGovern will step down as Chief Creative Officer and as a member of its board at the end of March, bringing to a close a two-decade stint that helped redefine the design identity of its core brands.
McGovern, who joined the Tata Motors-owned luxury carmaker in 2004, will leave the company to establish his own creative consultancy.
His exit marks a significant transition for JLR at a time when the company is repositioning its brands under a “modern luxury” strategy and accelerating its shift towards electrification.
Over the past two decades, McGovern has played a central role in shaping the design language of Range Rover, Defender, and Discovery, overseeing some of the most recognisable models in JLR’s portfolio. These include the Range Rover Evoque and Velar, two generations of the Range Rover and Range Rover Sport, as well as the modern-day Defender.
More recently, he took on responsibility for Jaguar, leading the early direction of the brand’s transformation. This included the unveiling of the Type 00 concept in Miami in 2024, which signalled Jaguar’s repositioning as an all-electric luxury marque.
Beyond individual models, McGovern was instrumental in developing what JLR describes as “Modern Luxury Brand Worlds” for Range Rover, Defender, and Jaguar — an effort aimed at creating distinct identities across design, experience, and positioning.
“It has been a great privilege to work at JLR across two extraordinary decades, and I would like to thank the Tata family in particular for the opportunities they gave me,” McGovern said.
“The dedication and passion of thousands of people across the business have made these brands what they are today, and I am enormously proud of what we have built together. I look forward to the next chapter of my creative career.”
JLR Chief Executive Officer PB Balaji credited McGovern with leaving a lasting imprint on the company’s brand and design direction.
“Gerry’s creative leadership, vision, drive, and passion have left an indelible stamp on our brands. I would like to thank Gerry for the significant contribution he has made to JLR and wish him every success in his next creative chapter,” Balaji said.
McGovern’s departure comes at a critical juncture for JLR as it continues to execute its multi-brand transformation strategy, which includes electrification across all its marques and a sharper focus on high-margin luxury segments.
His successor and the future leadership structure of JLR’s design function have not yet been announced.
