Epsilon Advanced Materials releases first sustainability report, achieves key environmental milestones

Epsilon Advanced Materials (EAM), a global manufacturer of lithium-ion battery anode and cathode materials, has unveiled its first Sustainability Report for 2023-24. The report was launched in the presence of Mr. Srikant Nagulapalli, Additional Secretary, Ministry of Power, Government of India, at the Confederation of Indian Industries (CII) India’s Outlook on Clean Energy Storage: A Roadmap to Net Zero summit in Delhi.

The report outlines EAM’s commitment to Environment, Sustainability, and Governance (ESG) initiatives. Notably, the company has achieved 100% energy self-sufficiency through a waste heat recovery power plant and has reached Zero Liquid Discharge (ZLD) by reusing 100% of its wastewater on-site.

A Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) of EAM’s graphite anode materials revealed that the company’s production processes generate up to 78% fewer emissions compared to those produced in China. This contributes to global carbon reduction efforts. The LCA study covered all stages of production, from raw material extraction to the final product, showing improvements in environmental performance.

The report also highlights EAM’s progress in digital transformation, with a current adoption rate of 69%. The company aims to achieve 100% digitalisation by 2025 to improve transparency, operational efficiency, financial consolidation, and sustainability tracking.

Additionally, EAM’s Corporate Environmental Responsibility (CER) initiatives have impacted over 300,000 people across 49 villages in Karnataka, where it has supported health, education, gender equality, and infrastructure development. The company also provided 1.2 million liters of drinking water to these communities during water scarcity periods.

Vikram Handa, Managing Director of Epsilon Group, stated, “Epsilon Advanced Materials was established to support the global EV battery supply chain with sustainable products and clean energy transition efforts. We are committed to sustainable operations, from raw material sourcing to waste minimisation and product innovation, ensuring our battery materials contribute to decarbonisation in e-mobility and energy storage.”

Sunit Kapur, CEO of EAM, added, “Our inaugural Sustainability Report, ‘Electrifying the Road to a Greener Tomorrow,’ reflects our commitment to producing high-performance battery materials with minimal environmental impact. As India’s first fully integrated producer of graphite anode materials, we are focused on circularity, innovation, and responsible practices to shape a cleaner and greener future.”
