Eicher Trucks and Buses, a division of VE Commercial Vehicles (VECV), has delivered six electric Skyline Pro-E 12-metre tarmac buses to IndiGo at Kempegowda International Airport, Bengaluru.

This marks Eicher’s first deployment of electric tarmac buses in the aviation sector. The vehicles will be used to transport passengers between the terminal and aircraft stands.

The Skyline Pro-E buses are powered by lithium-iron phosphate batteries and equipped with CCS2 fast charging systems. Each bus has a seating capacity of 17 plus driver, with additional space for 52 standing passengers. Features include full air suspension, power-assisted steering, and disc brakes on both axles, aimed at supporting airport ground operations.

Eicher has developed the EV powertrain in-house and is working on expanding charging infrastructure through partnerships. The company said the collaboration with IndiGo reflects efforts to introduce zero-emission mobility in airport operations.

Suresh Chettiar, Executive Vice President Bus Division, VECV, said, "With these tarmac coaches, Eicher stands committed to sustainably transporting the 42 million passengers that use this gateway to India’s Silicon Valley each year.”

IndiGo, India’s largest airline by market share, operates more than 2,200 daily flights with a fleet of over 400 aircraft. In FY25, it carried more than 118 million passengers.

VECV is a joint venture between Volvo Group and Eicher Motors, offering Eicher-branded trucks and buses and distributing Volvo trucks in India.
