BYD’s Denza to launch Z9 GT, D9 in India by end-2026

BYD’s luxury sub-brand Denza is set to enter India by the end of 2026 with two models – the Z9 GT fastback and D9 luxury MPV. Both models will be imported as completely built-up units (CBUs), with Denza positioned above BYD in the Indian market.

While BYD’s existing portfolio is expected to cover the Rs 20 lakh-80 lakh price range, Denza will target the premium end with products priced at around Rs 80 lakh and above.

Denza was established in 2010 as a joint venture between BYD and Daimler AG, now Mercedes-Benz Group. Mercedes subsequently exited the partnership, following which BYD repositioned Denza as a higher-end luxury brand in 2022.

Denza Z9 GT: 1,156hp electric fastback

The Z9 GT will be Denza’s performance flagship in India. While the model is available globally with both EV and plug-in hybrid powertrains, India will get the fully electric version consisting of a three-motor setup

The three-motor setup - one at the front and two at the rear, produces a staggering 1,156hp. The 2.9-tonne fastback can accelerate from 0-100kph in 2.7sec and has a claimed top speed of 270kph. The 122.5kWh battery provides a 600km combined WLTP range. Charging is one of the Z9 GT’s headline features, with BYD’s 1,500kW Flash ultra-fast charging system claimed to take the battery from 10 to 97 percent in just nine minutes.

The India-spec Z9 GT is expected to be priced between Rs 1.2 crore and Rs 1.5 crore.

Denza Z9 GT: Technology and cabin

The Z9 GT uses cell-to-body construction, integrating the Blade battery cells directly into the vehicle structure. It also gets rear-wheel steering with a sideways crab-crawl function and powered doors.

The five-seat cabin features five screens, including two displays that show feeds from the exterior rear-view cameras. The four outer seats get adjustable under-thigh support, heating, cooling and massage functions, while the rear seats also offer reclining functionality. Level 2+ ADAS is also part of the package.

Denza D9: Electric luxury MPV

The D9 will give Denza a foothold in India’s luxury MPV segment. While the global model is offered with both electric and plug-in hybrid powertrains, India will get the front-wheel-drive electric version. The D9 produces 313hp and 360Nm and uses a 103kWh Blade battery. Its claimed range stands at 520km on the combined WLTP cycle, while DC fast charging is supported at up to 200kW.

The D9 is expected to cost around Rs 80 lakh, placing it above the MG M9 but below the Toyota Vellfire.

Denza D9: Luxury-focused cabin

The D9 gets a 2+2+3 seating layout, with the middle-row captain seats being the highlight of the cabin. They feature power adjustment, heating, ventilation and massage functions, along with controls integrated into the armrests. The second row also gets fold-out tables and extendable leg rests. Other features include three-zone climate control, a premium Dynaudio sound system and full leather upholstery.

Like the Z9 GT, the D9 uses cell-to-body construction. It also gets an active body control system designed to minimise fore-aft pitching during acceleration and braking.

Denza India: Positioning and retail strategy

Denza will be retailed through exclusive showrooms separate from BYD, with the brand initially expected to focus on larger cities. The launch is likely to begin in the Delhi-NCR and Mumbai regions.

The D9 will enter a small but growing luxury MPV segment that includes models such as the Toyota Vellfire, Lexus LM and Mercedes-Benz V-Class. The Z9 GT, meanwhile, will occupy a much smaller performance-EV niche, with the Porsche Taycan being one of its closest alternatives.

The two products will serve different purposes for Denza. While the D9 could target a relatively established luxury MPV customer base, the Z9 GT is likely to function more as a technology and performance showcase for the brand.

Denza’s India strategy reflects BYD’s attempt to move further upmarket without directly stretching its existing brand. The D9 can give it an entry into the growing luxury MPV segment, while the Z9 GT’s 1,156hp powertrain and extreme performance should help establish Denza’s technology credentials. The bigger challenge, however, will be building brand desirability and recognition at the luxury end of the market, where the badge can be almost as important as the product itself.
