ASML to Support India’s Push for Locally Made Automotive Chips
The Dutch lithography major will support the establishment and ramp-up of Tata Electronics’ Dholera fab, which plans to manufacture semiconductors for automotive and other applications.
ASML is set to play a role in India’s push to locally manufacture semiconductors for automotive applications as the Dutch chipmaking equipment major expands its presence in the country.
The company will support the establishment and ramp-up of Tata Electronics’ upcoming 300mm semiconductor fab in Dholera, Gujarat. The $11 billion facility is planned to manufacture chips for automotive, mobile devices, artificial intelligence and other applications for customers globally.
ASML and Tata Electronics signed an MoU in May 2026 under which ASML will deploy its lithography tools and solutions at the Dholera fab. The two companies will also work on developing domestic talent, strengthening supply-chain resilience and building research capabilities.
Since announcing the partnership, ASML has established a legal entity in India and is in the process of setting up a customer support office, the company said at SEMICON India 2026 in New Delhi.
“India has a strong foundation to build a globally competitive semiconductor industry, supported by its growing market, engineering talent and expanding ecosystem,” said Wayne Allan, Executive Vice President and Chief Strategic Sourcing & Procurement Officer, ASML.
“Collaboration across industry, government, academia and the supply chain will be key to unlocking this potential,” he added.
Automotive Chip Manufacturing
The Dholera fab is significant for the automotive sector as India seeks to establish domestic wafer fabrication capabilities alongside its existing strengths in semiconductor design and a growing assembly and testing ecosystem.
Tata Electronics has partnered with Taiwan’s Powerchip Semiconductor Manufacturing Corporation (PSMC), giving it access to a technology portfolio covering 28nm, 40nm, 55nm, 90nm and 110nm process technologies.
Tata has previously said the fab will manufacture chips including power management ICs, display drivers, microcontrollers and high-performance computing logic, addressing markets including automotive, computing, communications and artificial intelligence.
The plant is planned to have manufacturing capacity of up to 50,000 wafers per month.
ASML’s Role
Lithography is a critical part of semiconductor manufacturing, allowing chipmakers to print circuit patterns onto silicon wafers. ASML supplies the equipment, software and services used in this process rather than manufacturing semiconductors itself.
At SEMICON India, the company is showcasing a portfolio combining lithography systems, computational lithography software, metrology and inspection solutions. ASML said the integrated approach can support manufacturers from system installation and process optimisation through manufacturing ramp-up and ongoing fab operations.
The company said these technologies are aimed at helping semiconductor manufacturers improve performance and yield while supporting high-volume production.
ASML’s involvement in the Dholera project adds a key semiconductor manufacturing equipment supplier to Tata Electronics’ ecosystem as India works towards establishing its first commercial 300mm semiconductor fab.
