Ashok Leyland Relaunches TAURUS and HIPPO Heavy-Duty Truck Models
Indian commercial vehicle manufacturer reintroduces iconic heavy-duty truck brands with advanced technology, targeting mining and infrastructure sectors with enhanced power, reliability, and operational efficiency for contemporary fleet demands.
Ashok Leyland has relaunched two of its most recognizable truck nameplates, TAURUS and HIPPO, bringing back brands that dominated India's heavy commercial vehicle market for decades.
The reintroduction was announced by Shenu Agarwal, Managing Director and CEO of Ashok Leyland, alongside senior executives Sanjeev Kumar, President of Medium and Heavy Commercial Vehicles, and Madhavi Deshmukh, National Sales Head. The event included customers, dealers, and media representatives.
TAURUS will serve as the company's high-horsepower tipper range, while HIPPO returns as the tractor portfolio flagship. Both vehicle lines are built on Ashok Leyland's AVTR modular truck platform and powered by 8.0-liter A-Series 6-cylinder engines producing 360 horsepower and 1,600 Nm of torque.
The HIPPO brand achieved widespread success from the 1980s through the early 2000s, establishing itself as a reliable heavy hauler. TAURUS earned distinction as India's first multi-axle truck and became so synonymous with the category that operators still use the name generically for multi-axle tippers.
The new models target mining, infrastructure, and construction applications. Key features include heavy-duty drivetrains, reinforced chassis, Hill Start Assist, and Automatic Traction Control as standard equipment. HIPPO offers optional Advanced Driver Assist Systems and Tire Pressure Monitoring.
Agarwal emphasized the vehicles' engineering for demanding applications, noting the combination of durability and productivity designed to improve fleet economics. Kumar highlighted the strategic importance of tippers and tractors as fast-growing segments within the heavy commercial vehicle industry.
The vehicles will be available through Ashok Leyland's nationwide dealership network. The company positions the launch as strengthening its presence in the high-horsepower commercial vehicle segment while honoring its engineering heritage.
