Agratas, the battery manufacturing arm of the Tata Group, has announced significant progress in the construction of its battery production facility in Sanand, Gujarat, with the structural steel framework approaching completion.
The 320-acre facility represents a major investment in India's clean energy infrastructure and is designed to achieve an annual production capacity of 20 gigawatt-hours (GWh) in its initial phase.
Currently, more than 2,000 construction workers and over 700 personnel from vendor organizations are actively working on the site, marking a substantial step toward strengthening India's domestic capabilities in advanced battery cell manufacturing.
Anand Sodha, Vice President of Supply Chain at Agratas, emphasized the momentum of the project. The facility aims to become one of the most advanced manufacturing plants in the country, he noted.
Two Tata Group companies are supporting the construction: Tata Projects Limited and Tata Consulting Engineers. Rahul Sharma, Strategic Business Unit Head for Urban Built Form at Tata Projects, highlighted the company's focus on delivering large-scale manufacturing infrastructure while maintaining sustainable construction practices.
Beyond physical construction, Agratas is developing an integrated supply chain system designed to provide real-time visibility across imports, exports, and domestic logistics. The company plans to implement automated operations and sustainable transport solutions aligned with global standards.
Agratas operates as a global battery business within the Tata Group portfolio. In addition to the Sanand facility, the company is constructing a manufacturing plant in Bridgwater, United Kingdom. Both facilities are intended to serve customers in the mobility and energy storage sectors.
The Sanand project is part of India's broader clean energy transition strategy, aiming to establish domestic production capacity for electric vehicle batteries and grid energy storage systems.
