India Yamaha Motor today became the latest OEM to launch BS VI-compliant motorcycles, five months ahead of the new emission norm kicking in. The first Yamaha motorcycles to mark the upgrade to BS VI are the 149cc FZ-F1 and the FZS-F1 priced at Rs 99,200 and Rs 102,700 respectively. Other Yamaha two-wheelers, starting with the 150cc bikes, will join the BS VI product line-up in the near future.

The new FZ-FI and FZS-FI are powered by the same 149cc Blue Core engine which develops 12.4 PS of maximum power and 13.6 Nm torque. Both are equipped with a single-channel ABS in the front wheel and front and rear disc brakes along with an LCD instrument cluster and a single-piece, two-level seat.

Motofumi Shitara, chairman, Yamaha Motor India Group of Companies, said, “The BS VI-compliant FZ motorcycles will be available across Yamaha showrooms from November. FZ is an iconic brand and many this popularity was of concern to the company while planning for its BS VI variant. Yamaha strived for optimum cost control and achieved to peg it around 2.5 percent higher. The new BS VI models in 150cc are also expected to yield Yamaha’s strong presence in the deluxe class two-wheeler category.”

The new FZ-FI and FZS-FI with ABS were first introduced in India in January 2019, alittle after Yamaha had rolled out the 'The Call of the Blue' brand campaign.

In the April-September 2019 period, Yamaha Motor India has sold a total of 326,957 units, which constitutes a sales decline of 23 percent year on year. This gives it a two-wheeler market share of 3.37 percent at present. It has 5.05 percent of the scooter market (157,483) and 2.71 percent of the motorcycle market (169,474).
