Triumph Motorcycles opens first Indian dealership in Bangalore, targets 500 unit sales by June

Bangalore, January 21, 2014: Iconic British brand Triumph Motorcycles, which last November launched its 10-model range across five categories in India, has inaugurated its first Indian dealership at Residency Road in Bangalore today.

The showroom design is in line with Triumph’s global signature layout with a consultation lounge, sales and aftersales desks. The facility will also display Triumph merchandise which includes riding gear, accessories and memorabilia. The new dealership has the showroom integrated with an aftersales service facility featuring service bays and a spare parts inventory.

Speaking at the dealership opening, Vimal Sumbly, managing director of Triumph Motorcycles India, said: “We are committed to setting new benchmarks in providing high-quality service experience to our brand enthusiasts and prospects in India. People in India have the money to buy premium bikes but the options are very limited here. Triumph will cater to the needs of premium bike lovers in the country.”

The company offers 10 models under five categories: Classics – Bonneville, Bonneville T100, Thruxton, Roadsters – Street Triple ABS and Speed Triple ABS, Super Sports – Daytona 675 R ABS, Adventure – Tiger 800 XC ABS, Tiger Explorer ABS, and Cruisers – Storm and Rocket III Roadster ABS. Ex-showroom Bangalore prices start at Rs 591,270 for the Bonneville through to Rs 20,47,320 for the Rocket III Roadster.

Of these 10 bikes, six are brought as Completely Knocked Down (CKDs) units while the remaining four models will be Completely Built Units (CBUs) from its UK and Thailand manufacturing plants. The CKD bikes are assembled at the company’s Manesar plant in Haryana.

Sumbly said the brand has been received a good initial response and 50 bookings have been recorded in Bangalore itself. “Across India, we aim to sell around 500 units by June this year,” he added. While the plan is to sell 20 bikes a month initially in Bangalore, by June this figure will rise to a cumulative 120-150 bikes.

The market size for premium bikes in India stands at 2,800 units per annum, a growth of 262 percent from the 450 bikes sold in 2008-09.

In 2014-15, Triumph Motorcycles India has targeted sales of 1,000 units and to 1,500 bikes in 2015-16. Sumbly is optimistic about the company selling 3,000 units annually by 2018.

The company will have nine dealers in place by March 2014. In addition to Bangalore, dealerships will be set up in Hyderabad, Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai, Kochi, Ahmadabad, Kolkata and Pune.

Triumph Motorcycles India has acquired land in Naganathapura, near Bangalore, to set up its manufacturing facility. While construction work is expected to begin by end-2014 or early 2015, operations will only go on stream by 2016.
