Tata Motors has readied the new avatar of the Nano – the GenX Nano – targeted at youthful buyers. Set to be launched soon, the latest Nano aims to add premium-ness to the brand. The big changes are the addition of an openable tailgate and the option of an AMT (Automated Manual Transmission).

The GenX Nano range comprises four variants – three with Manual Transmission (XE, XM, XT) mated to a four-speed gearbox and the top variant (XTA) is equipped with an AMT. The same 624cc petrol engine, which develops 37.4bhp, powers the car.

On the styling front, the GenX Nano gets a new Infinity design theme seen in the front and rear bumpers which come with an infinity motif grille. Other cosmetic highlights are smoked headlamps with black bezel and large circular fog lamps along with a sporty, integrated rear spoiler. The car will be available in seven colours – Sangria red, Persian Rose, Pearl white, Meteor silver, Royal gold, Dazzle blue and Damson purple.

Tata Motors says the car has “the best interior space with 4% better shoulder room and 6% better legroom, than the competition.”

The GenX Nano with the AMT gearbox gets a Sports mode that allows for a bit of zippy driving, and there’s also a Creep function that allows for crawling without any throttle input. The boot space in the AMT-equipped model is 94 litres, while the petrol manual has 110 litres of boot space.

Other changes on the GenX Nano include a bigger 24-litre fuel tank, new-look steering wheel, and an audio system with four speakers, Bluetooth, aux-in and USB.

The focus on young buyers is because the average age of Nano customers now is around 30 and around 50 percent of Nano customers are first-time car buyers. The Nano has till now sold over 250,000 units since its launch in March 2009.
