Nissan Motor India recalls 22,188 Micra, Sunny cars to replace master brake cylinder

New Delhi, May 25, 2013: As part of a global recall exercise, Nissan Motor India has issued a recall for 22,188 units of its Micra hatchback and Sunny saloon produced at its Oragadam, Chennai plant to replace the master brake cylinder in the two cars. These cars were produced between June 2012 and March 2013.

While no official customer compliant has been received, the company is going ahead with the voluntary recall exercise to maintain high level of customer safety and service. The problem is understood to be the likelihood of those driving these cars experiencing longer brake pedal travel when using the brakes under light braking force. In extreme cases, reduced braking performance is possible, due to which the distance required to bring the vehicle to a halt will increase.

Nissan Motor India says it will replace the faulty component free of charge and has informed its dealers about the same. In a statement the company said, "Nissan plans to begin notifying individual customers. Nissan dealers will replace the master brake cylinder at no cost to the customer. Nissan is committed to a high level of customer safety, service and satisfaction and is working with its dealers to promptly address this issue." Nissan’s global recall will see a total of 67,089 Micra and Sunny vehicles covering its market in Africa, Asia, Europe, Latin America, the Caribbean, and the Middle East that have also been impacted by the same faulty brake cylinder.

In recall mode

The Japanese carmaker has also globally recalled nearly 250,000 units but said that recall is not part of the India exercise and pertains to the fuel rail pressure sensor used in direct injection type engines of some of its models. However, this particular recall includes 9,600 units of the made-in-Chennai Micra and exported to Europe.

Nissan Motor Co, which plans to roll out its low-cost brand Datsun in India next year, had earlier this month announced a bigger recall affecting 841,000 cars worldwide due to a glitch with the steering wheel wherein the nut holding the steering wheel could become loose over time and the steering wheel could start to wobble.

The models March (K12) and Cube (Z11) produced in Japan and Micra (K12) vehicles produced in the UK had been sold in Japan, Europe, Asia, Oceania, Africa, Latin America and Middle East and would have to undergo a tightening of the steering wheel fixing bolt to the correct torque. The company said that repair would take about 40 minutes. The company said, "This will not affect India and the vehicles are not manufactured in India."
