Aiming to consolidate its position, Mahindra Two Wheelers (MTWL) is looking to expand its product portfolio by launching four models later this year. According to the company, the upcoming products lined up for commercial launch this year include a new scooter, a mass commuter bike and variants of its existing products.
On December 16, 2013, Autocar Professional broke the news about MTWL readying a 110cc automatic scooter (codenamed: G101). While the new scooter will be aimed at reviving the company’s falling scooter sales, the company looks to push its motorcycle sales by launching another mass commuter bike later this year.
It is to be noted that the 106.7cc Centuro (along with its variant launched recently) has done well for the company, powering its month-on-month sales growth over the last year. Meanwhile, Pantero, a not-so- successful model which runs on the same engine as the Centuro, will continue to sell in the domestic market.
While the company does not seem to be in a hurry to launch products, it has been working to set up an appropriate network and develop new products. MTWL has considerably expanded its pan-India footprint to 1,500 touch-points now, as against to about 600 last year. Viren Popli, chief of operations, MTWL, said: “We have been in stabilisation mode, putting our infrastructure in place in the past year. With a series of launches in both domestic and international markets, we are now looking at rapid growth.”
Speaking about the upcoming products, he said, "These will include variants of existing products, a new scooter and also we are looking at the 100-110cc motorcycle segment.” MTWL’s single-cylinder, 300cc naked street model named Mojo is also slated for the market launch in 2014. Interestingly, the firm is also developing a sporty, 160cc premium commuter bike for 2015 (Autocar Professional broke the story on February 21, 2014)
On the export front, the company is also aiming at tripling its volumes from India in the next six months by entering four new export markets this year. “By the end of the year, we will be exporting to a total of 15 countries, up from 11 now. We are looking to enter Colombia and Nigeria and markets adjoining these two countries. We will continue to export the Arrow commuter motorcycle, which is based on the 106.7cc Pantero platform,” added Popli.
The company had reported a growth of 83 percent in its June 2014 sales, when its domestic sales stood at 14,389 units, as against 7,849 units in June 2013. Exports for the month stood at 1,074 units.
