The State-run Kerala Automobiles is developing a hybrid three-wheeler along with the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (CDAC). The Thiruvananthapuram-based company has developed a four-stroke 214cc/9bhp petrol engine, which is part of the series hybrid vehicle under development. Testing is underway and the vehicle is likely to head out for ARAI approval by the end of this calendar, said managing director, T A Krishnamoorthy to Autocar Professional.
Since it is a series hybrid vehicle operating on a 42-volt system, the engine will run at constant speed. Emission levels are well within limits too. The production model is slated to give a mileage of over 40kmpl. CDAC has also incorporated CAN–controlled area network in the three-wheeler. The uses of wires is limited as signals are sent using only a pair of wires. The four-stroke engine can use multiple fuel options like CNG and LPG. At present, Kerala Auto is conducting field trials and the vehicle has operatd over 8,000km without any major glitches.
Only ten percent of the components will be manufactured inhouse and the rest outsourced. Besides captive consumption, the company will also explore options of selling standalone engines for different applications. It will soon launch CNG three-wheelers in both passenger and cargo versions. The in-house designed vehicle will have a 340cc 11bhp Lombardini engine.
Kerala Auto originally had a two-stroke petrol engine, which was developed inhouse based on API technology. However, with stringent emission norms, it began using diesel engines from Greaves India (now Same Deutz Fahr).
The company is also developing a new five-speed gearbox which, apart from the four regular gears, has a load and reverse gear.
By end-2006, the company plans to launch the Jumbo flagship model with a five-speed gearbox. The vehicle will be fitted with 10-inch wheels and wil have a load-hauling capacity of more than one tonne. Kerala Auto is scouting for a joint venture or technology partner in the near future, Krishnamoorthy added.
