India Yamaha Motor to set up 4000 KW solar power plant at Surajpur facility

India Yamaha Motor is setting up a 4000 KW solar power project at its Surajpur manufacturing plant. The company has partnered with solar service provider Amplus Solar for installation, operation and maintenance of the solar power system. The installation will get completed by April this year.

The solar power plant will help cut carbon dioxide emissions of approximately 138,000 metric tons and save approximately 10,20,000 barrels of crude oil annually. The Surajpur plant has a manufacturing capacity of 10 lakh units per annum and produces the YZF R3, YZF R15 Version 2.0, YZF R15s, Fazer-FI, Fazer, FZS-FI, FZS, FZ-FI, FZ, SZ-RR Version 2.0,  Saluto and Crux motorcycles. It also manufactures the Alpha, Ray Z, Ray and Fascino scooters along with CBUs like the VMAX, YZF R1M, YZF R1 and FZ 1 superbikes.

The project was inaugurated by Hiroaki Fujita, chairman, Yamaha Motor India Group Companies, and Takashi Terabayashi, managing director, India Yamaha Motor.

Inaugurating the project, Mr Fujita said, “With this initiative, Yamaha has led the way towards green manufacturing and demonstrated the much-needed balance between economy and nature. We have always believed in investing in environment-friendly technologies. This project reinstates our commitment towards the objective of energy conservation and support the country’s Green India Mission.”

The solar power system consists of solar cells that would produce electricity upon exposure to sunlight (photovoltaic effect). In the initial phase, the roofs of the factory buildings will be utilised to install solar panels to fulfill the partial need of electrical energy required for manufacturing operation. In further phases, it will be extended to cover parking areas inside the IYM Surajpur factory premises. India Yamaha Motor plans to install solar power systems in other plants as well.

Solar power cells are very environment friendly. They burn no fuel and have absolutely no moving parts which makes them virtually maintenance-free, clean, and silent. Generation of electricity through conventional fossil fuel sources leads to emission of carbon dioxide of approximately 0.5kg/KWH but solar power being a renewable energy source does not emit any carbon dioxide.
