India’s Heavy Industries Ministry commissions new study to tackle pollution in NCR

The huge environmental pollution challenge in the national capital and its adjoining areas can only be tackled by a comprehensive scientific approach.

For this purpose, the Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI) and The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) have embarked on a ‘holistic’ study to suggest scientific solutions. This project has been commissioned by the Ministry of Heavy Industries.  As compared to the study conducted by IIT Kanpur for the city of Delhi, the new study of ambient air quality measurement and source apportionment will cover the entire NCR.

Speaking about the project, ARAI's director Rashmi Urdhwareshe says, "The study will help the government in deciding the future policies on vehicular pollution or any atmospheric pollution, for that matter. The study, which has started just recently, is expected to be completed within a year. "We need one full year because the data collection is also dependent on the atmospheric conditions. So, complete seasonal variations also need to be taken into account," adds Urdhwareshe.

Delhi is currently witnessing some steps to curb pollution, which are also being debated as regards their efficacy. The odd-even scheme, which has kicked in from January 1, is apparently helping reduce congestion but hasn't had any significant impact on the air quality. The ban on selling of diesel-engined vehicles, from December 16, 2015, on the other hand, was upheld by the Supreme Court on Tuesday.
