Bucking the current downturn in two-wheeler sales, Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India (HMSI) continues to register healthy numbers. In August 2012, it clocked sales of 222,768 units, an increase of 39 percent YoY. This comprises 69 percent growth in bikes (104,316) and 20 percent in scooters (118,452).
In addition to the popular Activa scooter and CB Shine – the best-selling 125cc bike across the industry – the recently launched Dream Yuga commuter bike is the latest contributor to HMSI's burgeoning sales. Since its launch in mid-June 2012, the bike has sold 63,200 units.
Given the sales momentum for this 109cc bike, HMSI has begun rolling out 1,200 Dream Yugas every day as against the 800 units in June 2012 from its plant in Manesar.
This production upshift is in line with HMSI's target of selling 300,000 units of the Dream Yuga by March 2013.
The company is confident about posting good numbers this fiscal. Speaking to Autocar Professional last fortnight, Y S Guleria, vice-president, sales and marketing, HMSI, said: "We aim to post a healthy double-digit growth of 30 percent and sell 27,50,000 units in 2012-13. Backed by the increased production capacity, the company is now timely catering to the customer demands for scooters and motorcycles,” said HMSI is also bullish about the 125cc segment and has set the target of selling 600,000 units of the CB Shine and the CBF Stunner together during this fiscal.
