Ford’s global new small car to debut next month

Ford India has lined up an all-new global small car model (code named: B562), which will be officially seen for the first time at the upcoming Auto Expo in Delhi. According to two reliable industry sources associated with this project, though the model is currently under development, it will break cover at the Auto Expo next month while the model will be readied and launched later.

“Besides being the second small car for Ford in India, the model is also said to be crucial for Ford’s global product strategy as the company plans to export the model in good volumes in near future just like the EcoSport,” added an industry insider on the condition of anonymity. Sources say that Ford’s B platform can give birth to a bunch of new models with applications in India as well as abroad, which is in-line with company’s One Ford plan.

While Figo was a game-changer for Ford in India, EcoSport helped the company survive through the toughest year (2013) in recent times and took Ford India’s sales (domestic and exports) to 119,715 units.

In a recent interview to McKinsey & Company (reprinted in Autocar Professional’s 15 December ‘13 anniversary issue), Alan Mulally, president & CEO of Ford Motor Company had said that “discretionary income in the Asia-Pacific region is increasing, and many economies are reaching the take-off stage for our industry, as new car buyers enter the market. We have used extensive data and research to determine the factors that will influence their purchasing decisions, and we have a specific plan in place to capture those consumers by providing a complete family of best-in-class vehicles.” One key announcement on these lines is expected to be made by Ford on the 3rd of next month.
