Delphi brings its electronics to India

Delphi Corporation has begun construction of a new electronics manufacturing facility in Oragadam, 40km from Chennai. While unveiling the foundation stone for the new plant, Ashok B Ramaswamy, president and managing director, Delphi India said, “This event highlights how important India has become for the future of Delphi and marks the beginning of Delphi’s electronic manufacturing presence in India. Our vision is to grow profitably through a broad range of locally manufactured products and also support India’s growing small car development activity." The Rs 250 crore project is a result of growth in Delphi's electronics business in India. After evaluating various sites for a potential manufacturing plant, Tamil Nadu emerged the leading contender. The new plant is slated to begin production by end-2009 and will manufacture electronic products in the areas of controls and security, safety and entertainment and communications. The Oragadam plant is the company's fifth manufacturing plant in India. Delphi has three units in Delhi and one in Bangalore, which also houses a technical centre in Bangalore. Jeffrey Owens, president, Delphi Electronics and Safety, and president, Delphi Asia-Pacific said, “India is a key market for Delphi. We believe that extending our manufacturing process will help us meet the needs of customers in this market."
