Cosworth India fires up in Pune

UK-based performance engineering company Cosworth Group has commenced operations in India from September 14 with the opening of its Pune office. Cosworth India, a wholly owned subsidiary, is looking to offer its engineering development expertise to the Indian automotive industry. The company says Pune is an ideal location since it is a technology hub, has manufacturing plants of major OEMs and is also an established academic centre. The new facility is expected to help Cosworth to tap into the rapidly growing Indian marketplace that will enable it to provide customised solutions to challenges within the emerging performance aftermarket and motorsport industry, Indian OE automotive, aerospace engineering and energy generation sectors. According to Kayzad Kasad, director of operations, Cosworth India, “We have the ability to design and develop any configuration of engine, from single to multi-cylinder and normally aspirated to forced induction, including supercharged and turbocharged. We are able to work on petrol, diesel or biofuel-powered engines.” Elaborating on the recent entry, he adds: “Having decided to expand geographically into India, Cosworth has now an operational office is in place at Pune. We have put together a team which specialises primarily in business and product development. The Indian operations would focus on all the Cosworth Group’s key business areas such as mobility, security and energy, where it has existing products or technologies which could be complemented.” “With its high end engineering legacy, Cosworth has a lot of know-how to offer to the Indian automotive industry like emissions reduction, upgradation from Euro 3 to Euro 4 and then to Euro 5, power enhancement, engine weight reduction, noise reduction, increasing fuel efficiency and calibration work. We can also offer the industry engine management systems like ECUs and data loggers,” explains Kasad. He says, "There are some great immediate opportunities for the business to apply Cosworth’s array of performance technologies in the automotive, motorsport and performance aftermarket sectors. I am confident that my team will provide cost-effective performance solutions to Indian customers that showcase Cosworth’s unparalleled electronic and mechanical technologies. We have established initial contacts with Indian OEMs and we are keen to work with them. Also, we will work with certification bodies such as the ARAI.” Kasad says that Cosworth India will also be exploring the option of doing work for its UK parent company “in due course of time.” Concluding on an upbeat note, Kasad says, “Cosworth Group has built a reputation for innovative technology that delivers high performance solutions for the aerospace, defence, automotive, marine and energy generation industries. We would like to recreate the same business model in India. On the aftermarket side, we intend to offer step-by-step solutions to the enthusiast interested in increasing the performance of his vehicle with upgrade kits. In fact for hardcore enthusiasts, we can offer Duratec engines with power ranging from 205bhp to 280bhp.”
