Capgemini targets tier 2 and 3 cities for talent

Capgemini, a leading provider of software services to the automotive sector and others, is reaching out to tier-2 and tier-3 cities in order to meet its target of hiring over 60,000 employees in the current year. It could not be independently ascertained as to how much of the new hirings will be allocated to the auto segment.

Talking to Autocar Professional, Rajesh Kosalram, Head of Automotive, Capgemini India said, "So when you are in the ecosystem, you also face problems like others". Without going into details of employee numbers, Kosalram added that the company has been successful in attracting the right talents including by reaching out to prospective candidates in tier 2 and tier 3 cities, which earlier remained largely untapped.

In addition to looking for talent beyond the major metros, the company is upskilling its existing employees apart from also collaborating and signing Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with at least 50 universities and educational institutions to train and groom students, and make them job-ready when they step out after completing their education.

The IT industry in general has been experiencing a relatively higher attrition rate since the past several quarters due to sudden rise and buoyancy in the job market. This has led to a talent crunch in certain skill-sets.

France headquartered Capgemini which has an employee strength of over 169,000 employees in India is looking to tap opportunities in the Indian auto segment where on the one hand, digitisation is picking up, and on the other, the push towards electrification is requiring new skillsets. These skillsets pertain to capabilities for Industry 4.0 as well as the deployment of technologies on the cloud, big data, artificial intelligence, connectivity, software, digital engineering and platforms on the mobility platform.

New software capabilities
In 2021, Capgemini on an overall base generated €18 billion in revenues at the global level, up 14.6 percent when compared to published figures in 2020. Digital and cloud services, which account for around 65 percent of Capgemini’s activity, have accelerated steadily throughout the year, reporting strong double-digit growth, reflecting the priority given to digital transformation projects including in the auto sector.

Capgemini management in their recent annual report indicated that with part of its workforce in India having moved and unlikely to return to some of the large offices, it therefore now makes sense for the company to establish satellite offices though the model hasn’t settled yet. According to the report, “Our strategy is based on the principle of an 'anchor point,' where people who join can meet each other and act as a community."

Helping Mercedes Benz in R&D
Capgemini, which has been developing and maintaining Mercedes Benz Group AG's core electric/electronic product data management (EE-PDM) application in an R&D environment claims that the benefits derived from the project are multi-fold and is helping in bringing agility and improved efficiencies to the auto major. The EE-PDM application is used for the development and documentation of electronic vehicle components.

Capgemini which is supporting the leading automotive manufacturer in migrating applications to the Cloud and further transforming it in a microservices environment with DevOps. Five teams in Germany and India are helping in delivering the latest requirements for the application. "There is now quicker feedback and less communication barriers," Kosalram signs off.
