Chennai-based Ashok Leyland has bagged a big order for 1,750 buses from Tamil Nadu state. This order from Tamil Nadu State Transport Undertakings comes close on the heels of new business contracts from other STUs recently.  

Speaking about the order, Anuj Kathuria, COO, Ashok Leyland, said, “We are very happy to receive the confirmation of this order from Tamil Nadu STU. Our ability to bring value, combined with our superior technology and innovation will help us maintain our leadership position in buses in India.”

Ashok Leyland is currently the fourth largest manufacturer of buses in the world and India’s largest bus manufacturer. This order would further consolidate its leadership position. Sanjay Saraswat, President - MHCV, Ashok Leyland added that, “with this order, our orderbook for State Transport Undertakings has enhanced significantly. This is a testament to the reliability, durability and robustness of our buses.”

Ashok Leyland is the dominant player in the 12-16.2T category, where mostly private players and STUs are big customers, with an over 60 percent share. The Viking, Cheetah and 12M are the company’s tried-and-tested products in the segment.
