ARAI taps Swedish expertise for fire risk analysis for buses

The SP Technical Research Institute of Sweden and the Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI) are gearing up to make available a full suite of the former’s fire risk analysis services available to the automotive industry. ARAI will offer manufacturers of public transport vehicles in particular, the opportunity to engage in joint projects with itself and SP to develop appropriate fire safety technologies.

ARAI taps Swedish expertise for fire risk analysis for buses

Such projects will progress in phases, beginning with a survey of the hazards, risks, and relevant regulations, and the identification of a typical bus for further study. The next phases will involve simulating the fire behaviour of the structure as part of a detailed technical analysis of the chosen vehicle, including analysis of the thermal properties of the interior materials, to identify and recommend technology interventions.

Subsequently, all vulnerable parts and components prone to fire hazards will be tested and validated, culminating in a full-scale fire test of the entire vehicle to characterise its fire (safety) performance.

SP Technical Research Institute, headquartered in Borås, is a leading organisation for research into how fires can affect buildings, tunnels, vehicles, and ships, and for the fire safety evaluation of structures and systems. It operates some of Europe’s most extensive facilities for fire research and research into materials and products, and is a notified test laboratory for several global test standards
