WAE Technologies launches performance-optimising EV battery intelligence software

WAE Technologies (WAE) has launched Elysia, its battery intelligence software designed to unlock significant improvements in the life, safety, usable energy, power, and rapid charging times of any battery system.

According to WAE, “Elysia brings game-changing battery insight, management, and optimisation of batteries to the mass market for the first time, from the automotive, commercial vehicle and e-mobility sectors to stationary energy storage and beyond, unleashing the potential of the most fundamental component of an electric vehicle: the battery.”

Elysia draws on WAE’s unrivalled experience in high-performance batteries, gleaned from the sole supply of batteries to ground-breaking electric motorsport series, as well as the design and development of batteries for electric hypercars and mining trucks.

Facilitating optimised performance

Elysia features state-of-the-art embedded and cloud-based products which together provide customers – including global automotive OEMs, fleet operators and battery asset financiers – with not only unprecedented access to battery insights, but the ability to manage, optimise and enhance performance across the battery’s entire lifecycle, both in the vehicle and in ‘second life’ applications such as stationary grid storage.

Furthermore, the improved insight and control provided by Elysia, reduces an OEM’s need to oversize or overengineer battery systems, enabling them to be lighter, cheaper and more sustainable.

The core offering is based around two key products – Elysia Embedded and Elysia Cloud Platform.

Elysia Embedded is a suite of state-of-the-art battery management algorithms, which run locally on the Battery Management System (BMS) – for example directly on an EV’s battery or on a stationary energy storage system. Its BMS algorithms help OEMs to increase vehicle range, enable faster charging, and maximise battery power, enabling them to stay ahead of the competition delivering the best possible performance to customers, without compromising safety or battery life.

Whereas conventional battery management systems traditionally require extensive data from testing and limits specified by cell suppliers to build software that controls how the battery is used, WAE states that Elysia Embedded’s algorithms offers customers the ability to unleash untapped potential through intelligent ‘physics-informed’ models. These algorithms have been designed to run on standard low-cost chips as typically found in mass-market battery management systems. In applications to date, this has shown the ability to bring up to a 30% increase in battery life and 10% potential increase in battery range, whilst also enabling dramatically reduced fast charge times and higher peak power output when compared to traditional battery management algorithms.

Elysia Cloud Platform is a cloud-based system which uses proprietary digital twin technology. It helps OEMs, fleet owners and battery asset financiers turn data into actionable insights, designed to enable these customers to forecast and extend battery life, enhance safety, and protect warranty and residual values. By providing a complete picture of the battery’s state of health, it brings much-needed transparency, while enabling accurate verification of degradation and in-life fault-finding, offering the potential to revolutionise the second-life battery market.

Elysia Commercial Lead, Joe Jones, said: “The battery in any electric vehicle of any kind represents the single most valuable system by far.  Better understanding of battery systems will transform how we manage them, in order to realise their full potential.”

“Elysia, Battery Intelligence from WAE, opens up a new era of electrification. Elysia’s unique capabilities offer unprecedented insight and foresight, unleashing untapped performance, life and safety to every electric vehicle, and every battery on the planet.

“We are providing easy to interpret, actionable battery insights to give OEMs, fleets and battery asset financiers unprecedented transparency, allowing them to optimise a battery and improve its performance and the value it delivers over the course of its life.”

WAE Technologies CEO, Craig Wilson, said: “For more than a decade now, WAE has led the world in the design, development, and manufacture of the most advanced EV batteries ever seen. We have been the sole supplier to major electrified motorsport series, extending batteries to their limits in the heat of competition on the racetrack. We’ve also pushed the boundaries with electrification of hypercar programmes and lately, electric mining trucks and other heavy equipment.

He added, “One of the most crucial components of our leadership is the software which has enabled these vehicles to set new performance standards. At WAE’s core is the commitment to transferring new technology from motorsport to other sectors – so I am delighted we have launched Elysia. The electric mobility market is growing quickly, and battery intelligence is the key to unlocking the potential of what is the most fundamental part of an EV.”
