Volkswagen Group sells 953,400 units globally in May 2018
The company sold 370,400 units in the Asia-Pacific region with China contributing to around 91 percent of the total sales in the region.
Volkswagen group announced that it delivered 953,400 units globally in May 2018, up 6.1 percent compared to same period last year. The company has sold over 4.5 million vehicles since January this year, an increase of 7.7 percent.
The company states a total of 416,400 new vehicles were handed over to customers in the European market in May 2018, an increase of 5.8 percent, in Western Europe alone the company sold 345,800 vehicles (+5.5 percent). Developments in the home market of Germany in May was also positive, with 123,200 vehicles sold, a rise of 2.0 percent.
In Central and Eastern Europe the groupd sales grew by 7.3 percent in the month, at 70,600 units, of which 18,500 units sold in Russia (20.0%). The Group has delivered over 1.9 million vehicles to customers in Europe since the beginning of the year (5.5%).
In the North American region, Volkswagen group sold 383,900 vehicles (1.7%) in the first five months, of which 258,300 vehicles were delivered in the USA, an increase of 6.8 percent. In the month of May, 83,000 units were delivered in North America, down 1.5 percent.
The US market saw 55,800 units of Volkswagen vehicles being handed over to customers (2.7%) in May. Volkswagen has sold a total of 51,700 vehicles (19.0%) in South America for the month , including 32,900 units in Brazil (28.1%). In South America, the group delivered more than 232,200 vehicles in total since the beginning of the year (13.5%).
In the Asia-Pacific region the company sold 370,400 in May, an increase of 7.5 percent, with deliveries in the Chinese market consisting of 340,700 units (6.6%). The company states over 1.8 million vehicles (11.1%) were delivered in the Asia-Pacific region in the January to May 2018 period, of which just under 1.7 million were handed over to customers in the Chinese market alone, which translated to an increase of 11.6 percent.
Fred Kappler, head - Group Sales, Volkswagen Group, said, "May 2018 was a particularly strong month for the Group and enabled our company to remain on its growth path in the second quarter. The Group and its brands have seen positive developments in the core regions since the beginning of the year – partly thanks to the comprehensive product offensive.”
Considering the brand-wise sales, Volkswagen passenger cars contributed 56 percent of the total group’s sales in May 2018. Seat saw a substantial increase in its YoY sales for the same period selling 49,200 units, registering a growth of 15.5 percent.
