SAIC-GM-Wuling has launched the much-awaited Hong Guang S3, the first SUV from the Wuling brand and targeted at family and business users.

The Hong Guang S3 will build on the success of the Hong Guang nameplate, which has had sales of more than 3.5 million units over the past seven years. The new model has adopted many of the features that made its siblings popular – adding a more spacious interior, enhanced design and greater flexibility.

The Hong Guang S3 is built on the same platform as the Hong Guang. It has a 2800mm wheelbase, along with a length of 4655mm, width of 1735mm and height of 1780mm (1790mm with the optional roof rack).

It also comes with a 2+2+3 seating layout and the second and third rows can be folded to carry more cargo. The back can accommodate four 20-inch suitcases.

To meet the varying needs of users, the Hong Guang S3 comes with an array of storage spaces such as front seat back pockets, card slots, storage boxes behind the center console, and middle seat cushion storage boxes.

The basic black interior complemented by brown accents has a classic look. The console provides a sense of speed through a large electronic instrument display and an 8-inch LCD screen. Electroplated strips and a quartz clock add a sense of luxury. All three rows of seats have USB ports and air-conditioning vents.

Tough exterior
The Hong Guang S3 has a new tough and dynamic exterior design. The front end is dominated by a hearty intake grille. Fog lamps and LED daytime running lights are integrated on the sides of the bumper. With a design similar to that of jet fighter air intakes, they project a strong visual impact.

Adding to the aesthetically pleasing and distinct styling are rising beltlines on the side, along with a floating roofline, diamond-cut mirrors, carved knife window light bars and double-wing five-spoke alloy wheels.

On the safety front, the Hong Guang S3 gets Electronic Stability Control (ESC), Hill-Start Hold Control (HHC), reversing radar, cruise control, heated external mirrors and a rear windshield defogger.

The Hong Guang S3 features a multi-link independent rear suspension, which contributes to its quiet interior and sedan-like comfort. Its large tires and 208-mm ground clearance enable it to handle challenging surfaces.

Five Hong Guang S3 variants, plus a choice of 1.5-litre naturally aspirated or turbocharged engines, are being offered. They are priced between RMB 56,800 and RMB 81,800.
