Chevrolet has launched in China the all-new Cruze, the brand’s best-selling model both globally and in China, with over 4 million sold since the first-generation model's launch seven years ago.

The all-new Cruze builds on the strengths of its popular predecessor, with a sporty exterior and roomy interior, a choice of fuel-efficient engines with stop/start technology, a sports chassis, class-leading connectivity with 4G LTE, and enhanced safety. Chevrolet announced the sedan is available in seven different trim levels, with a price range between RMB 109,900 (Rs 11.18 lakh) and RMB 169,900 (Rs 17.29 lakh).

“Underpinned by GM's most advanced global midsize car platform, the all-new Cruze is designed for the new generation of car buyers who are looking for the ultimate driving experience,” said SAIC-GM President Wang Yongqing.

Sporty styling

Chevrolet says the 2016 Cruze’s design is derived from a balance struck between the designers’ inspiration and the efficiency-optimising input of wind tunnel testing. The result is one of the sleekest-looking cars in the class, with a 0.28 coefficient of drag – an attribute that contributes directly to fuel economy.

The interior incorporates Chevrolet's signature dual-cockpit design, with an efficient butterfly-shaped centre console and contemporary two-tone sporty leather trim. The wheelbase has been extended to a segment-leading 2,700mm for added comfort. Among its user-friendly features are cruise control, keyless entry, push button start, heated seats and an Electric Parking Brake (EPB).

Efficient powertrains

The new Cruze gets a choice of a 1.4-litre direct injection turbocharged engine or a 1.5-litre direct injection engine. The new global small-displacement engines offer combined fuel consumption as low as 5.7 litres/100 km thanks to the introduction of fuel-saving technologies such as the standard stop/start.

The 1.4L turbocharged engine generates maximum output of 110 kW and peak torque of 240 Nm. It is paired with a finely tuned intelligent seven-speed DCG transmission that provides smooth and precise gear shifting.

The 1.5L direct injection engine generates 84 kW of maximum output and 146 Nm of peak torque. Those who prefer this engine can select a new intelligent six-speed DSS transmission or a six-speed manual transmission.

The all-new Cruze rides on a sports chassis that was tuned at the Nürburgring race track in Germany and comes with the GM-patented reinforced Watt linkage. The lightweight design and increased use of ultra-strength materials have resulted in a weight loss of 120 kg without impacting stiffness, for an agile driving experience.

Class-leading connectivity and advanced safety

In line with the demands of the younger generation of car buyers, the all-new Cruze offers a segment-leading connected experience. Users can access smartphone functions through the standard 7-inch multi-touch colour screen.

With OnStar 4G LTE connectivity, the all-new Cruze serves as a Wi-Fi hotspot that enables users to connect up to seven mobile devices within a space of 700 square meters. Users can also enjoy Chevrolet's new-generation MyLink infotainment system, which supports Apple CarPlay and Baidu Carlife.

On the safety front, the all-new Cruze gets a tyre pressure monitoring system (TPMS), a blind zone alert system, the second-generation active park assist (APA), automatic on/off headlamps and a reverse camera.

With the launch of the all-new Cruze and introduction of the Malibu XL earlier this year, Chevrolet has entered a new phase of growth in China. It plans to launch five new or upgraded models in the second half of 2016, including an SUV and performance vehicle in North America and China simultaneously, giving Chevrolet a competitive full product lineup.
