The Qiantu K50, a 402bhp Chinese-built electric sports car, has been unveiled in near production-ready guise at the Beijing motor show.

The K50 is powered by two electric motors and has 479lb ft of torque and a claimed 186-mile/297.6km range. Production could begin at the end of this year with sales starting in 2017, and the model will have a starting price of around £70,000/Rs 69 lakh.

The coupé has a claimed top speed of 124mph/198kph and a 0-100kph of 4.6sec, making it one second quicker over the benchmark sprint than the base-model Tesla Model S.

The interior includes sports seats and a large tablet-style touchscreen infotainment system on the dashboard, while a solar panel on the roof helps power the car’s electronics.

Based on the Qiantu K50 Event concept car from the Shanghai Motor Show last year, the K50 gets an aluminium frame and carbonfibre body.

The K50 will be joined in Qiantu's line-up by a K50 Roadster, also shown in concept guise in Beijing, and two other electric cars, but there's no word on whether any of them will be sold outside of China.

Qiantu Motor is building a new factory which will initially have a production capacity of 50,000 cars.
