Tata Motors launches new 1.2-litre Revotron petrol engine
Mumbai, January 20, 2014: Tata Motors has announced the launch of the Revotron Series, its next-generation petrol engine family that will power its future models in the passenger vehicle market. The all-new engine family reflects the company’s new focus on petrol-engined vehicles.

The first petrol engine from the Revotron series is a 1.2-litre turbocharged intercooled multi-point fuel injected motor. Tata Motors says it has developed the Revotron Series with inputs from renowned global players in the areas of combustion, boosting, friction and calibration. It has also worked closely with global engine consultant AVL (Austria) and key technology partners like Bosch, Honeywell, Mahle and INA to bring in the latest technology for the new engine series.

The 1.2-litre engine is claimed to be light weight and low on friction, delivering high performance and high fuel economy. The Revotron series will include 3-and 4-cylinder petrol engines. Announcing the launch, Ranjit Yadav, president, Passenger Vehicle Business Unit, Tata Motors, said: “With the launch of the Revotron 1.2T, Tata Motors’ passenger vehicles business is making a strategic shift towards a more complete portfolio. This engine brand (Revotron) uses key technological advances to revolutionize and balance great driving manoeuvrability, without compromising on power or fuel efficiency.”

The 1.2T engine, which is equipped with a high boost turbocharger, delivers 84bhp at 5000rpm and 140 Nm torque at 1750-3500rpm. On the fuel economy front, the engine has a selectable multi-drive mode and uses low viscosity, fuel efficient engine oil. An optimized water-jacket and head gasket, using Computational Fluid Dynamics technology, enables efficient combustion and reduces thermal inertia. In addition, the engine has been incorporated with an 8-hole fuel injector for superior efficiency and assisted by innovative calibration strategies.
