Toyota India Dispatches 45 Urban Cruiser Ebella Electric SUVs in May

The first Toyota EV in India, which is the badge-engineered version of the Maruti e-Vitara midsize SUV, plugs into a market witnessing growing demand for electric mobility in the wake of petrol, diesel and CNG price hikes. The Toyota Ebella, though, is priced at a considerable premium over its Maruti cousin.

The Urban Cruiser Ebella, Toyota’s first electric vehicle in India, has opened its wholesale innings with factory dispatches of 45 units in May 2026. This gives the Ebella a 0.14% share of the 30,560 passenger vehicles (up 4.55% YoY), including 27,170 utility vehicles (up 12% YoY), that Toyota Kirloskar Motor (TKM) sold in May 2026. This is as per the passenger vehicle industry wholesale numbers released by SIAM last week.

The Toyota Ebella is the badge-engineered version of the Maruti e-Vitara, which registered estimated wholesales of 528 units in its first month of sale (January 2026). The Ebella, which rivals the Mahindra BE 6, Vinfast VF6, MG ZS EV, Hyundai Creta Electric and Tata Curvv EV, is currently sold in three variants: E1, E2 and E3.

At present, Toyota has announced pricing only for the Ebella’s top-spec E3 variant (with the 61kWh battery pack): Rs 23.60 lakh (ex-showroom) and Rs 25.05 lakh (on-road). In comparison, the Maruti e-Vitara is priced between Rs 15.99 lakh and Rs 19.79 lakh. Both the Ebella and the e-Vitara have the Battery-as-a-Service (BaaS) option, which lowers the upfront cost.

Comparing the top-spec variants of the two e-SUVs, the price differential of over Rs 380,000 clearly reflects the premium an EV buyer pays for the Toyota brand, along with the associated promise of efficiency and reliability. TKM has equipped all its 500-plus BEV-enabled service touchpoints with the latest BEV diagnostic tools and advanced infrastructure. These are manned by over 2,500 BEV master technicians with over a decade of electrification experience, facilitating hassle-free service and 45-minute express maintenance across all outlets.

Like the Maruti e-Vitara, the Toyota Ebella can be had with either a 49kWh or 61kWh battery pack, both of which get single front-mounted electric motors. While the smaller battery pack is offered with the base-spec E1 trim, the E2 and E3 variants get the bigger 61kWh battery pack. ARAI has certified the Toyota EV to have a travel range of 440km-543km on a single charge.

On the outside, the Toyota Ebella sets itself apart from the e-Vitara with sharper LED headlamps, a different front bumper and unique detailing for the rear light bar. The Toyota Ebella interior is near-identical to that of the e-Vitara, with highlights including a black-and-brown finish, a two-spoke steering wheel, vertically oriented AC vents and a floating centre console.

On the features front, the Toyota Ebella gets a 10.25-inch infotainment touchscreen, a 10.1-inch digital driver’s display, a wireless charging pad, automatic climate control, a JBL sound system, ventilated front seats, a powered driver’s seat, wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, connected car tech, 12-colour ambient lighting and more.

While the Toyota Ebella’s safety rating is yet to be revealed, the Maruti e-Vitara has scored 5 stars in Bharat NCAP testing. Additionally, the Toyota Ebella’s safety features include six airbags, ABS with EBD, traction control, ESC, Level 2 ADAS, a blind spot monitor, ISOFIX child seat anchors, a 360-degree camera, hill hold control, rain-sensing wipers and more.

Will Ebella sales pick up in the coming months? TKM has yet to announce pricing for the E1 (which has the smaller 49kWh battery pack) and E2 variants. If they bear a competitive sticker price, the EV penetration level for Toyota in India could rise in tandem with its growing status in the Indian passenger vehicle market.
