The Volkswagen Taigun, which turned five years old last month after its launch in September 2021, has surpassed the 100,000-units domestic market sales milestone. As per SIAM wholesales numbers, the midsize SUV has sold 99,095 units till end-September 2026.
The 905 units needed to achieve 100,000 sales was bridged in the first couple of days of October. Volkswagen India has also exported 52,751 units which takes combined domestic and export sales to 151,846 units.
As the wholesales numbers ((see data table above) reveal, FY2023 was the Taigun’s best fiscal to date with sales of 21,736 units, when it accounted for the bulk – 53% – of VW India’s passenger vehicle sales of 41,326 units.
Since then, however, demand has tapered – FY2024’s 20,485 units were down 6% YoY and FY2025’s 19,910 units lower by 3% YoY. FY2026 saw Taigun sales fall to their lowest –
12,912 units, down 35% YoY – when it was the second highest-selling model for VW India after the Virtus sedan (22,959 units) and ahead of the Tiguan midsize SUV (1,126 units), Golf hatchback (243 units), Tayron three-row SUV (238 units) and Tiguan Allspace (98 units).
A likely reason for the slowed-down sales could be that the Taigun feels a segment lower compared to the midsize SUV segment leader Hyundai Creta, the new Kia Seltos or the Maruti Grand Vitara.
Nevertheless, in the current fiscal’s first six months, the Taigun (7,163 units) has logged 4% YoY growth (April-September 2025: 6,891 units). The uptick in H1 FY2027 sales can be attributed to the launch of the facelifted model in mid-April 2026 with the midsize SUV receiving subtle styling updates, more features and a new automatic gearbox.
The updated Taigun, priced between Rs 11 lakh and Rs 19.47 lakh (ex-showroom), sports revised front and rear styling, connected LED lighting with an illuminated Volkswagen logo, new alloy wheel designs and fresh colour options. Six airbags and electronic stability control are standard, and the facelift retains the previous model’s five-star Global NCAP crash-test rating.
Overall, the updates focus on refreshing the Taigun’s design and equipment while retaining its existing engine options of only petrol engines – a 115hp 1.0 TSI turbo-petrol engine or a 150hp 1.5 TSI, both of which get manual and automatic options.
As is known, the Taigun is the first product offering by the VW brand in the midsize SUV segment, developed on the globally acclaimed MQB A0 IN platform under the strategic India 2.0 project.
The Taigun, which is the sister SUV to the Skoda Kushaq 9 (104,863 units sold since its June 2021 launch) under the India 2.0 project, is part of the growing midsize SUV market in India which includes models like the Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, Toyota Hyryder, Tata Siera, Maruti Victoris, Honda Elevate, Mahindra’s BE6 and XEV 9e electric SUVs, and the Tata Curvv.
Autocar India’s buyer’s guide commentary for the MY2026 Taigun states: “A new look, more features and a new AT gearbox for the 1.0 TSI engine address many of the Taigun’s lesser points. The VW feels as solid as ever, and remains one of the enjoyable midsized SUVS to drive, especially with the 1.5 TSI engine. However, it’s not as spacious as many rivals and trails on a few feel-good features too.”
