The Indian scooter industry continues to make news with its stellar performance each month, and even more so in CY2026 YTD. July 2026 missed the 800,000-unit wholesale mark by a whisker – just 1,810 units. Factory dispatches of 798,190 units by nine OEMs represented a 24% YoY increase (July 2025: 645,022 units). The big news is that TVS Motor Co (256,675 units, up 40% YoY) outsold long-standing scooter market leader Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India (233,337 units, down 12% YoY) by 23,338 units last month.

India Scooter Inc’s July wholesales of 798,190 units were the second-highest monthly dispatches after October 2025 (824,003 units), the only month in which total wholesales surpassed the 800,000 milestone. July is the sixth of the past seven months of CY2026 to see 700,000-plus wholesales (see data table below). April missed the 700,000-unit mark by just 8,007 units.

July missed the 800,000 milestone by a whisker – 1,810 units – but took the 7-month total to 5.2 million units and set India Scooter Inc on track for its highest-ever annual sales of 9 million units in CY2026.

TVS (256,675 units, up 40%) unseated Honda (233,337 units, down 12%) from the No. 1 position in July. While TVS’ scooter market share rose to 32% from 28%, HMSI’s share fell to 29% from 41% YoY.

The scooter rankings, always dominated by Honda at the top, saw TVS Motor Co unseat Honda in July, leading by 23,338 units. TVS, whose ICE portfolio includes the Jupiter, NTorq and Zest, sold 197,289 of these petrol-engined scooters, up 23% YoY. The two EVs – iQube and Orbiter – added 59,386 units, up 158% YoY.

Suzuki Motorcycle India dispatched 120,998 scooters, up just 28% YoY, and saw its share rise to 15% from 14% a year ago. The Access 125 remains its best-selling product, ahead of the Avenis and Burgman Street, which are also powered by the same 125cc engine. Suzuki, which has entered the EV segment with its e-Access, sold 825 units in July.

Fourth-ranked Hero MotoCorp dispatched 61,347 units last month, up 33% YoY, giving it an 8% market share. The sales comprise 38,640 units (up 11%) of the three ICE scooters (Destini 125, Pleasure and Xoom) and 22,707 Vida e-scooters (up 102%).

Bajaj Auto, the No. 2 e-2W and e-scooter OEM in India after TVS, dispatched 48,684 units last month, posting 301% YoY growth on a low base (July 2025: 12,134 units). These comprise 47,184 Chetaks and 1,550 Yulu e-bikes. This strong performance saw its scooter market share triple to 6% from 2% a year ago.

India Yamaha Motor, with 36,783 units, clocked 53% growth, taking its market share to 5% from 4% a year ago. Yamaha saw a smart jump of 46% in sales of its 125cc-engined Fascino and Ray ZR, which sold 31,945 units, while demand doubled (up 102%) for the 155cc Aerox scooter (4,544 units). Yamaha, the last of the Japanese OEMs to enter the e-scooter arena, dispatched 294 units of the EC-06 to its premium Blue Square showrooms last month.

EV start-up Ather Energy, which will unveil a new mass-market e-scooter on August 29, continues to make waves. Like TVS, Bajaj Auto and Hero MotoCorp, it is also benefiting from the faster customer transition to EVs and sold 31,044 units in July, up 106% YoY, doubling its share of the overall scooter market to 4 percent.

River Mobility, which currently manufactures a single product (Indie e-scooter), dispatched a record 6,039 units last month, up 226% YoY (July 2025: 4,186 units).

Piaggio Vehicles, which markets the Aprilia and Vespa scooter brands, clocked wholesales of 3,283 units, up 40% YoY (July 2025: 933 units).

Every fifth scooter the industry sold in July was an electric model. The 170,243 units sold represented a 168% YoY increase, powered by TVS, Bajaj Auto, Ather Energy and Hero MotoCorp (Vida).

E-Scooter Penetration at 21% in July, Every Fifth TVS Scooter Sold in 2026 is an EV

July 2026 saw SIAM member companies dispatch a total of 170,243 e-scooters, up 168% YoY (July 2025: 63,560 e-scooters). Month on month, July e-scooter wholesales were up 16% (June 2026: 146,668 units). As a result, the share of electric scooters in overall scooter sales in July rose to 21% – a handsome 11-percentage-point increase over the 10% in July 2025.

Electric 2-W market leader TVS Motor Co dispatched a record 59,386 iQubes and Orbiters to its showrooms across India, logging handsome 158% YoY growth (July 2025: 23,012 units). This performance gave TVS a 35% EV penetration rate in its scooter sales in July, a new high. As in Q1 FY2027, every fifth scooter that TVS has sold in the January-July 2026 period is an electric model. Of the 1.52 million scooter wholesales (up 33% YoY), TVS EVs account for 314,104 units (up 77% YoY). Clearly, it is the two e-scooters that are giving an aggressive TVS a sustained shot of sales power and drawing it closer to Honda in the overall scooter market stakes.

Bajaj Auto, which manufactures and markets Chetak and Yulu e-scooters, saw its wholesales soar threefold YoY to 48,684 units, up 301% YoY (July 2025: 12,134 units), giving the Pune-based major a 29% market share. The sales comprise 47,184 Chetaks (up 307%) and 1,500 Yulu EVs (up 173%).

The brand will launch its first EL platform-based scooter – expected to be priced between Rs 100,000 and Rs 125,000 – at Ather Community Day on August 29.

Fourth-ranked Hero Vida, which expanded its Vida line-up in mid-July with the new VX2 Plus (4.4 kWh) variant priced at Rs 143,000 (ex-showroom Delhi), continues to register strong numbers. Last month, it doubled its sales YoY to 22,707 units.

The three Japanese e-scooter OEMs – Honda, Suzuki and Yamaha – sold a total of 2,383 units in July.

India Scooter Inc Rides Towards Record 9 Million Sales in CY2026

In the years following the pandemic, the domestic scooter industry has gradually come into its own, driven by refreshed as well as new models, a revival of demand from rural India and semi-urban regions, the GST 2.0 reform, which slashed prices of ICE models, and the rapid advance of zero-emission electric models.

CY2026 is set to be another record year for India Scooter Inc. Cumulative seven-month domestic wholesales at 5.21 million units are up 32% YoY (January-July 2025: 3.95 million units) and already account for 69% of the record 7.52 million scooters sold in CY2025

In July 2026, scooters (798,190 units, up 24%) had a 41% share of the 1.92 million two-wheelers sold, including 10,74,796 motorcycles (up 21%, 56% share) and 50,497 mopeds (up 49% YoY, 3% share). The accelerated consumer demand for scooters, particularly since May, can be attributed to multiple hikes in petrol prices in mid-May and a growing number of 2W buyers shifting to e-mobility due to the uncertainty surrounding ICE vehicles at present.
