The Toyota Rumion MPV, launched on August 10, 2023, has turned two years old in the Indian market. As per industry wholesales data, the Toyota Rumion has clocked cumulative sales of 34,221 units in the 24 months till end-July 2025.
The Rumion MPV is one of Toyota Kirloskar Motor’s (TKM) successful products in the past two years. Since its launch, the sensible, no-nonsense Maruti Ertiga-based people-mover, which is among the four rebadged Maruti Suzuki models in TKM’s portfolio, has made its presence felt in the affordable MPV market.
As the sales data for the past 24 months reveals, the Rumion sold 5,973 units in the last eight months of FY2024, accounting for 2% of the 245,676 passenger vehicles Toyota Kirloskar Motor sold. In FY2025, the 21,878 units were a 266% YoY increase and contributed 7% to TKM’s record 309,230 PV sales. In the current fiscal’s first four months, the estimated 6,370 Rumions sold comprise 6% of TKM's estimated 109,591 passenger vehicle dispatches.
In FY2025, the Rumion was the fifth best-selling MPV in India after the Maruti Ertiga, sibling Toyota Innova Hycross/Crysta, Kia Carens and Maruti XL6. This Toyota-branded MPV maintained the same fifth ranking in Q1 FY2026 (April-June 2025) with 5,794 units, up 24% YoY (Q1 FY2025: 4,677 units).
No-nonsense people-mover with the Toyota badge
The Maruti Ertiga-based Rumion is the fourth badge-engineered model shared between the TKM and Maruti Suzuki India, after the Glanza hatchback (based on the Baleno), Urban Cruiser Hyryder (based on the Grand Vitara) and the Urban Cruiser Taisor compact SUV (based on the Fronx). The Toyota-Suzuki partnership has also resulted in Maruti Suzuki borrowing Toyota Kirloskar Motor’s Innova Hycross to develop the Maruti Invicto MPV.
The Toyota badge commands significant value in the Indian market, which buys into the brand's core ethics of high quality and durability over long-term usage. That a Toyota seldom disappoints, is cheaper to maintain over its competitors and also offers robust resale value, are reasons enough for buyers to be drawn towards the company's latest offerings, despite four of them being badge-engineered Suzuki versions.
In the case of the MPV segment, durability and reliability are the key customer demands that the Rumion fulfils adequately, just like Toyota's other people-movers like the Qualis of yesteryear and the Innova, which have established the carmaker's high-on-quality image in the Indian market.
Compared to the Ertiga, the Rumion sees very few styling changes to its plastic parts. It gets an all-new bumper with revised fog lamp surrounds, an Innova Crysta-like grille and dual-tone alloy wheels. On the inside, it gets a blacked-out dashboard with wood-like inserts, and the upholstery, similar to the Ertiga, is finished in beige.
The equipment list and 7-seat configuration, too, has been carried over from the Ertiga. Incidentally, the Rumion is also exported to markets like South Africa where it is sold in the exact same spec as in India.
Petrol and CNG power
Under the hood, the Toyota Rumion uses the same Maruti Suzuki 1.5-litre petrol engine that develops maximum power of 103hp and 137 Nm of torque, mated to a five-speed manual or a six-speed torque converter automatic gearbox. The Rumion is also offered with a factory-fitted CNG kit that produces 88hp and 121.5 Nm in CNG mode. Toyota claims the petrol version has a fuel efficiency of 20.51kpl, while the CNG version returns 26.11km/kg.
There are a total of seven variants on offer – six petrol and one CNG. The base S petrol variant is priced at Rs 12.86 lakh (on-road Mumbai) while the top-end petrol Rumion V AT has a sticker price of Rs 16.79 lakh (on-road Mumbai. The S CNG variant costs Rs 13.50 lakh.
In comparison, pricing for the Toyota Innova, which is TKM ‘s best-selling product sold as the Hycross and Crysta variants, is much higher. The Innova Hycross’ pricing (on-road Mumbai) starts at Rs 22.49 for the base variant and goes upwards to Rs 38.62 for the top-end ZX (O) strong hybrid variant. The Crysta, now available in only four variants, is priced from Rs 24.20 lakh to R 31.94 lakh.
Rebadged models’ share of TKM PV sales at 56% in April-July 2025
FY2026 sees Toyota Kirloskar Motor continue the strong trajectory of growth it has displayed since the past couple of years. Sustained demand for Toyota-made MPVs and SUVs as also the clutch of rebadged models along with ramped-up production and customer-friendly initiatives are paying dividends in the competitive marketplace.
TKM’s rapid progress is reflected in its cumulative dispatches in the first four months of FY2026 – the 109,591 units are a 12% YoY increase.
In FY2025, of TKM’s record passenger vehicle sales of 309,230 units, up 26%, the share of the four rebadged models (Glanza, Hyryder, Rumion and Taisor) was 53% at 163,483 units.
In the current fiscal’s first four months, these four models have cumulatively sold an estimated 61,254 units, accounting for 56% of TKM’s total sales of 109,591 passenger vehicles.
With eight months still to go in FY2026, Toyota Kirloskar Motor has already achieved 35% of its FY2025 PV sales till end-July 2025. With the festive season a couple of months away, and sustained strong demand for most of its products, it can be expected that Toyota India will go on to achieve the 350,000 units mark for the first time in FY2026.
