At the end of May 2025, the Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder, which scores high on fuel efficiency with its strong-hybrid petrol engine, needed another 5,644 units to drive past the cumulative 150,000 sales mark in the domestic market. With estimated wholesales of 7,462 units in June, which is the second month in a row of 7,000-plus sales after May’s 7,573 units, Toyota Kirloskar Motor’s popular midsize SUV has clocked total sales of 151,820 units in the domestic market.
This confirms Autocar Professional’s forecast published on June 17, 2025. The 7,462 units in June 2025 mark the third instance of Hyryder sales going past the 7,000 mark in the 34 months since the midsize SUV’s launch in September 2022. The other months are May 2025 (7,573 units) – which is the new benchmark – and July 2024 (7,419 units).
The Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder, which was launched on September 9, 2022, has taken 34 months to achieve 150,000 sales in the domestic market. The last 50,000 units have been sold in a little over 9 months, which indicates how rapidly demand has grown for this midsize SUV.
The Hyryder continues to be among Toyota India's star performers. In the first three months of FY2026, this model has sold 19,677 units, up 72% YoY (Q1 FY2025: 11,433 units). This gives it the No. 5 rank amongst midsize SUVs and No. 14 in the Top 20 utility vehicle rankings for Q1 FY2026, ahead of the Mahindra XUV700, Maruti Grand Vitara and the Kia Seltos.
Toyota Kirloskar Motor’s cumulative passenger vehicle sales in Q1 FY2026 are 80,472 units, up 18% YoY (Q1 FY2025: 68,341 units). The Hyryder’s share of TKM sales in Q1 FY2026 at 19,677 units is 24% compared to 17% in Q1 FY2025. This makes the Hyryder the second-best-selling model for Toyota Kirloskar Motor in the current fiscal after the popular Innova Crysta / Hycross MPV which has sold an estimated 25,383 units and accounts for a 31% share of TKM dispatches in Q1 FY026.
HYRYDER: BEST-SELLING REBADGED MODEL IN FY2025 AND Q1 FY2026
Along with its own SUVs and MPVs, Toyota Kirloskar Motor’s resurgence in the UV market in the past two years is being driven by the four Maruti-rebadged models led by the Urban Cruiser Hyryder midsize SUV. The Hyryder, whose combined domestic and market sales have crossed 200,000 units, is currently the best-selling rebadged model for Toyota India, under the Toyota-Suzuki alliance.
In the current fiscal’s first three months, the Toyota Hyryder has clocked wholesales of 19,677 units, the highest of the four badge-engineered models in India that sport the Toyota logo – the Glanza (based on the Maruti Baleno), Urban Cruiser Hyryder (based on the Maruti Grand Vitara), Rumion (based on the Maruti Ertiga) and the Urban Cruiser Taisor (based on the Maruti Fronx).
In FY2025, the Hyryder clocked 60,388 units, up 23% YoY, and was the company’s best-selling Maruti-rebadged model last fiscal. This model’s USP is its strong-hybrid petrol powertrain, aimed to fill the void created by the lack of a diesel engine and to also bridge the gap between petrol and EVs.
The Toyota Hyryder is essentially a modern-looking SUV which exudes a rugged look that’s sportier than its donor model, the Maruti Grand Vitara but both midsize SUVs are identical in every other way. The Hyryder’s upmarket, well-appointed interior talks comfort and the features list is a generous one albeit the fully loaded trim levels are exclusive to the strong hybrid variants. And there’s the lure of the Toyota badge too.
With a claimed fuel efficiency figure of 27.97kpl, the Hyryder is one of the most fuel-efficient vehicles available in India and benefits from technology which is able to minimise losses in a pure IC engine by electrification to leverage benefits such as brake-energy recuperation and turning off the engine while idling excessively (see Toyota Hyryder driving impression).
Toyota India entered the midsize SUV market much later compared to most of the leading players but the Hyryder seems to be making up for lost time rapidly. Interestingly, the Hyryder has the distinction of being India’s first SUV to get CNG power when TKM launched the CNG variant in November 2022.
The petrol-only Hyryder is available in 13 variants – eight petrol, two CNG and three strong hybrid – with pricing starting from Rs 13.10 lakh for the base E variant to the G CNG (Rs 18.01 lakh) and through to the top-end V strong-hybrid eCVT (Rs 23.22 lakh, all prices on-road Delhi).
