The Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder, Toyota Kirloskar Motor’s popular midsize SUV which scores high on fuel efficiency with its strong-hybrid petrol engine, has hit its best-ever monthly sales yet in May 2025.
At 7,573 units sold last month and handsome 94% YoY growth (May 2024: 3,906 units), the Hyryder accounted for 26% of the company’s passenger vehicle wholesales of 29,230 units (up 22% YoY) and 31% of TKM’s utility vehicles sales of 24,279 units (up 26%). The Hyryder’s stellar sales in May 2025 improve upon its previous best of 7,419 units in July 2024, which is the only other month when the 7,000-unit dispatch mark was surpassed in the past 33 months since its launch in September 2022.
That’s not all. The Hyryder, which will soon drive past 150,000-unit sales in the domestic market and which has seen exports of 51,293 units till end-April 2025, continues to be the best-selling rebadged model for Toyota India, under the Toyota-Suzuki alliance.
The Toyota Hyryder is essentially a modern-looking SUV which exudes a rugged look that’s sportier than its donor model, the Maruti Grand Vitara but both midsize SUVs are identical in every other way. The Hyryder’s upmarket, well-appointed interior talks comfort and the features list is a generous one albeit the fully loaded trim levels are exclusive to the strong hybrid variants. And there’s the lure of the Toyota badge too.
Cumulative sales data for the Hyryder since its launch shows just how rapid growth has been for the midsize SUV, which has along with other Toyota models, helped power TKM’s resurgence in the SUV market. From 22,839 units in the last seven months of FY2023, sales more than doubled to 48,916 units in FY2024 and went on to hit best-ever fiscal year sales of 60,388 units in FY2025, which saw Toyota India register record sales of nearly 310,000 passenger vehicles, up 26%, and included 258,537 UVs, up 35% (FY2024: 191,065 UVs).
The Hyryder robust sales in FY2025 meant that it was the company’s best-selling Maruti-rebadged model last fiscal. This model’s USP is its strong-hybrid petrol powertrain, aimed to fill the void created by the lack of a diesel engine and to also bridge the gap between petrol and EVs.
With cumulative wholesales of 144,358 units till end-May 2025, the Hyryder needs to sell 5,643 more to surpass the 150,000 mark, which it should easily achieve at the end of June.
With a claimed fuel efficiency figure of 27.97kpl, the Hyryder is one of the most fuel-efficient vehicles available in India and benefits from technology which is able to minimise losses in a pure IC engine by electrification to leverage benefits such as brake-energy recuperation and turning off the engine while idling excessively (see Toyota Hyryder driving impression).
In the current fiscal’s first two months – April and May 2025 – the Toyota Hyryder has clocked wholesales of 12,215 units, the highest of the four badge-engineered models in India bearing the Toyota logo – the Glanza (based on the Maruti Baleno), Urban Cruiser Hyryder (based on the Maruti Grand Vitara), Rumion (based on the Maruti Ertiga) and the Urban Cruiser Taisor (based on the Maruti Fronx). This gives the Hyryder a 22% share of TKM’s total passenger vehicle sales of 54,019 unit in the past two months while the cumulative sales of the four rebadged models at 30,935 units give them a 57% share.
Toyota India entered the midsize SUV market much later compared to most of the leading players but the Hyryder seems to be making up for lost time. Interestingly, the Hyryder has the distinction of being India’s first SUV to get CNG power when TKM launched the CNG variant in November 2022.
The petrol-only SUV is available in 13 variants – eight petrol, two CNG and three strong hybrid – with pricing starting from Rs 13.10 lakh for the base E variant to the G CNG (Rs 18.01 lakh) and through to the top-end V strong-hybrid eCVT (Rs 23.22 lakh, all prices on-road Delhi).
In a field teeming with rivals including the Hyundai Creta, Maruti Grand Vitara, Kia Seltos, Mahindra Bolero, Bolero Neo and Thar, Honda Elevate, Skoda Kushaq, Volkswagen Taigun and also EVs like the Tata Curvv, Mahindra Be 6 and XEV 9e, the Toyota Hyryder stands out as a well-rounded SUV that scores big on efficiency.
